Apartment A was created in 2002 with the premiere of All Night Radio at the Electric Lodge in Venice.
Seeking to continue a vanguard approach to theater and create bold, original new work, Apartment A began attracting an eclectic group of theater artists.
In October/November 2002, the group produced An Evening... Called Trouble, a collection of original short plays. An Evening... In Bed bowed in July 2003, featuring new work by Sharr White, Maurice Chauvet and Patricia Cotter. The 2004-2005 season opened with A Safe Distance, a new full-length play written by Maurice Chauvet for the company. Chauvet received an Ovation Award nomination for Best World Premiere Play and A Safe Distance was included in Backstage West’s annual Critics List. In the fall, Apartment A returned with Patricia Cotter’s comedy Three, developed by the company from the short play featured in . A hit with critics as well as audiences, Three played to sold-out houses and was a Los Angeles Times Critic’s Pick. In February 2005, the company presented An Evening... On the Brink, another evening of original short plays by writers from across the country. The 2004-2005 season culminated with Apartment A being named resident theater company at the Electric Lodge, Venice’s solar-powered arts center.
Apartment A takes much of its inspiration from the diverse artistic community it serves. Company productions have been host to the community’s artists -- both established and emerging -- and local musicians have provided the plays’ soundscapes.
Apartment A is funded by Patron donations, fundraising events, corporate and public grants and from ticket sales.
