As a group of young individuals, we feel that the current state of affairs in our society has reached a new level of depravity.Official figures state a decrease in crime, but any body can see the increase in VIOLENT crime and it doesn’t help that there is a wall of silence built up of fear in communities.There are many issues that can claim a contributing factor to the recent growth in “gun culture” and in our opinion each issue is as valid as the next for example the breakdown of the family unit, a lack of positive role models, poverty, but the one that seems to come up most in the primary research we carried out in numerous housing estates, schools and colleges…. Is the lack of constructive and INTERESTING activities for local youth.Society seems to need periodic wake up calls to the problems we face today, reading it in the paper every once in a while or hearing it on the news reminds us, but we forget all too soon, until its on our doorstep or it’s a family member and we are directly affected its easy to be upset for a minute and move on.This is one in a number of causes that we have discussed and feel that if more people focused on them for longer periods of time, then street level solutions can come to help street level issues, to put it in lamens terms.Our group started at a small social gathering, where a discussion was raised about the gun crime problem, the increase in teenage pregnancy and the lack of social awareness for social problems.The outcome of this discussion was the formation of a group with this mission statement.4 Da Cause! using fun events and activities to showcase important social issues and offer alternative outlets for youth energy and creativity.Since we decided it was time to stop talking and start doing, we have approached various people to find out more about how we can help and who would be willing to help us help the community.So here we are.We are hoping to establish a long term project, consisting of different components, right now our focus is to raise awareness and ask for help in combating the rise in violent crime, we needed o think how we could reach the 15 -30 year age bracket, we decided that if we wanted to be able to reach the young members in south London long term we would have to do something that would capture their attention and still allow our message to be spoken.
