Influences: IAN LLOYD PROFILEIan Lloyd’s fate was destined with both parents being touring
professionals. His father was a famous orchestral, television
and session Violinist and his mother was a celebrated lyric
Sopranist. It’s no wonder he was born on the road while his
father was on tour in Seattle. “My whole thing began ’on the
road,’ so it is kind of fitting that I passed it on to my son!â€
Proud of the fact that his family is comprised of three generations
who all performed at Carnegie Hall, he can truly say music is in
their ‘blood.’ Ian and his family were based in New York where
he attended an English-style private boarding prep school in
Peekskill. “That helped to make me the way I am today,†he quips.“I don’t know when I realized I had a special voice.†As a child he
always sang to R&R records starting with the then popular Presley,
Dion & the Belmonts, and Frankie Lloyd Price. He started buying r
ecords by Gene Pitney and Jerry Lee Lewis and basically just sang
to everything he loved. When at Heartwick College around 1965,
he was playing in bands on the weekend and was also signed to
United Artists to do a few singles for the label. One particular t
rack had serious airplay and became a regional hit. “It was a
horrible song - very embarrassing - and I was not too keen on it.â€â€œI grew up loving Rod Stewart and Faces, The Byrds, Pink Floyd
and the Kinks. The Beatles were a huge influence on me. They
brought sophistication and a classical aspect to music, which I
appreciated. In the late 60’s, I then developed ’my own style’.â€As lead singer of Stories formed with Michael Brown (The Left Banke/
â€Walk Away Reneeâ€) in the early 70’s, he molded that style singing
melodies “that didn’t exist!†Ian and Michael’s fathers were working on a session together and suggested that Ian contact Michael Ian found him
working on material that was supposed to be a†piano instrumental-typeâ€
rock record. “That went out the window when I started singing.â€Stories first hit was “I’m Coming Home†followed by their number
one hit “Brother Louie†and then “Mammy Blue.†With Stories
he had performed on a number of TV shows including
“The Midnight Special.†He also interviewed with the legendary
radio DJ Alison Steele (“The Nightbirdâ€) for the Armed Services
disc around 1973. “Ours was the first of the series, then Mac Davis
and Don McLean. In the middle was Spooky Tooth with Mick Jones
being the guitarist at that time,†reflects Lloyd.
When Stories disbanded, Ian pursued a solo career. His well-received
albums include his first self-entitled, Goosebumps, Third Wave
Generation, and Planet X. With a litany of credits to his name,
Ian’s career and his indomitable vocal style have firmly established
his place in rock history. His distinctive voice has won him
international acclaim and fans that continue to adore him.
Lloyd’s vocal credits include singing on hits with a myriad of major
recording artists on tracks, which include Foreigner’s
“Feels Like The First Time,†“Cold As Ice,†“Waiting For A Girl Like You,â€
“Juke Box Hero,†and “Double Vision.†He can also be heard on
Billy Joel’s “I Go To Extremes,†as well as appearing on CDs by
Yes, Peter Frampton, Ian McDonald [of King Crimson/Foreigner fame]
and Survivor, to name a few. He has sung on numerous jingles
including a recent “Folgers†commercial singing Foreigner’s
“Feels Like The First Time,†which he finds a bit humorous having
sung on the original track.
As well as being an avid artist, musician, science fiction fan and
comic book collector, Ian is a baseball fanatic. His philosophy:
“I believe in some kind of cosmic connection, the balloon theory,
everything is part of everything.†Part of the perspective for his
current project is to “live while you can and just enjoy yourself!â€
Ian’s new project o-de-PO embraces both the spirit of his history
with a current tone that remains distinctly Ian. Lloyd often sings
back up for his son David’s band, Social Hero. Ian resides in
New York City with his wife, Karen and is preparing to go back
on the road with the Ian Lloyd Band to begin yet another chapter
in his music legacy.
