Sound is the beginning of our species, our cultures, our selves. It is the most fundamental part of our being, beginning with our mothers’ heartbeats. It is the building block of communication, predating even writing. As a medium, it allows us to transfer information, ideas, the most intimate parts of our consciousness to one another— sometimes directly, sometimes abstractly— but always telling a story of the human condition. Music holds stories within it; not always as concise as the verb or noun, it is the language of the heart. It is the lexicon of the inexpressible. Like spoken language, it may vary, but it is universal to every culture. It binds us together. It can embody the identity of a people, and that which identifies us as people— human, one and all. These songs are the sounds and music of my imagination. They are the labor of love, of accident and breakdown, and of intent. They are the ghosts in my ear.
