About 5 years ago, my wife and I returned home to find a scrawny white dog on our doorstep. For two weeks, we laughed about what types of dogs must have bred to create such a poor looking dog. We just knew it was the worst possible combination based on the appearance of the dog. However, a friend visited one night and told us we had inhererited a West Highland Terrier and she thought it was full blooded. Sure enough, my wife took the dog to a vet who also believed this dog was full blooded and about 7 months old. I cannot tell you the problems with this breed we've experienced and the money we've spent. For starters, the dog is just ugly. It has awful fur like a brillo pad. The fur is often greasy and always yellowish. For this reason, we named the dog Stain. In addition, it has a strange, larger body and longer legs. Next, the dog is just not appealing to look at in anyway, yet it prances around as though it looks nice or something. Beyond looks, this dog is schizophrenic and not intelligent at all! I could throw a ball into burning fire and this dog would run in to get it. It has absolutely no mind of its own and waits for cues of recognition from owner to do anything. It is a kiss-ass, dumb animal. Finally, it likes and doesn't like certain people..and when it doesn't care for a person, it either snaps or hides for no reason. Beyond those qualities, the animal is always sick..from skin rashes, to skin smells, to hip problems. We have spent a fortune on this mutt! I want to find all dogs that we continue to "brand" by AKC adn related agencies and put a stop to this nonsense. There is no reason in the world for West Highland Terriers to continue to exist.
