TRIP LOG/DAY ELEVEN: Winds of 80 m.p.h. buffet my craft across the playa like a kite. Expect to reach Black Rock and set up camp before dark. Temperature nearing freezing, but too windy to start a fire.DAY FOURTEEN: Can't loose the eerie feeling I'm being watched. Leftovers of my breakfast eaten and a blanket missing from camp. Tracks suggest a large ape or human.DAY TWENTY: Sandstorm. Found my lost blanket near swamp and under it a woman's body, alive despite apparent exposure to storm and cold. Applied warm compress and fashioned makeshift stretcher to drag her back to camp.DAY TWENTY-SIX: Woman now capable of eating thin soup. Our communication is limited at present to the single word, "Polly", which I believe the woman uses to indicate herself. "Polly" is now sitting upright and even assisting me with simple tasks around camp. She clearly comes from a culture with a language and the capacity to use tools.DAY THIRTY-ONE: Amazing! As an experiment, I gave "Polly" a large empty bean can, which she proceeded to pound in an astonishing complex rhythmic pattern. When I added a simple melody by way of bamboo flute, "Polly" seemed startled at first, but actually seemed to alter her drumming as if to respond to my tune.
