Bob Oldfield

About Me

Bob was born in Liverpool - the home of all good music! He spent his formative years between wanting to be a Beatle, (hanging around outside the Cavern Club at age ten hoping to see someone famous) and hoping one day to play for the mighty Reds (Liverpool, of course) who, in the sixties, had just started to take the football world by storm. Neither happened, although a lifetime's enjoyment of both footy AND music has been possible.! Currently Bob is pursuing his solo and acoustic trio project playing as much as possible and in between times rocks out with a cover band and also leads the musicians at his local church.

Influences: I was reading my old pal Bryn Haworth's comments and have to agree that to some extent musical influences depend on who I am listening to at any given time. Bryn himself always inspires me, as does Bruce Cockburn. For sheer pezzaz I love Steely Dan's jazzy overtones. Neil Young always helps me to remember to try to keep it simple. Way back there Larry Norman and Randy Stonehill provided me with an urge to write songs and Phil Keaggy astounded me with what he could make a guitar do, as did Pete Banks with keyboards in the awesome After The Fire in the late seventies. I'm somewhat a blues fan and spent a long time listening to the Delta Blues of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Reverend Gary Davis, Sonny Boy Williamson and the like. I recently met the 93 year old Honeyboy Edwards - what a thrill!!! Right now John Mayer and Eric Clapton inspire me to work harder on my licks. Johnny Lang is an inspiration and Stevie Ray is obviously up there... and which guitar player doesn't appreciate the tasteful and unique voicings of Mark Knopfler. For energy, the early U2 take some beating. Stevie Wonder is just, well... wonderful. Of course, coming from Liverpool I have to mention the Fab Four!! For awesome vocal harmony I used to love 2nd Chapter of Acts. Wow - there are so many... I'll amend this list as time goes on. Non-musical influences include Francis Schaeffer, C.S.Lewis, J.R.R.Tolkien, Jeff & Michael Shaara, Nelson Mandela, Paul Hewson (Bono), Sir Bob Geldof, Steven Spielberg, Sir George Martin, Steve Turner.

Hard to bear...

It was a reasonably normal day in work today, at least as far as any day in an elementary school can be classed as 'normal'. That was until about 2pm when we got a call from the High school up the roa...

Goodbye Christina

It's been a sad week in the Oldfield household. Early on Good Friday morning we received word from England that Christina, my wife's mom, my mom-in-law, had been given just a matter of hours to live. ...

Is it necessary?

A perennial whine of mine is this whole thing around the celebration of 'easter'. I went into a nameless supermarket the other day to buy my wife some birthday flowers (now that's GOT to be worth some...

Is it spring yet?

Well, here in Vernon in the most beautiful part of BC, we've had a weekend that swung from sunny enough for me to sit outside and catch a few rays on Saturday, to snowflakes gently falling on Monday m...

When the rain comes, they run and hide their heads... (John Lennon)

Headed off to Seattle last weekend to see a 'Beatles Experience' show by the highly acclaimed Beatles band "Rain". Rain was, indeed, the order of the weekend as it just poured and poured once we passe...

Well, let's give it a shot..!

It's funny to see myself up there on the internet, pushing out my name and saying stuff about myself that people can either choose to believe or not. It's strange, after living a good number of years ...
