"With the album "Songs", Dust prove there is room for another genre. A gentle interplay between technology and played instruments is brought together via sophisticated production that delivers a kind of psyche/alt/country that is very easy to enjoy, but the more you listen, the more you find." Tim Richie, ABC Radio National, July 2007
"Dust’s debut album "Songs" is 'an intoxicating mixture of country twang, melancholy folk and urban scrawl, all with psychedelic overtones…all warmly nostalgic and atmospheric' " Terrascope.co.uk, July 2007
"The production, music, vocals/harmonies all sound fabulous....it is as psychedelic/folk/alt.country should be" Cheryl Byrnes, Country Music Capital News July 2007
"An assured debut album of psychedelic influenced folk/country rock, delivering spacious fragility and solid intensity in equally astonishing measures...Marvellous!" Thee Sonic Assassin, Sideways through Sound, 2NSB, Sydney, August 2007
"This mature and sophisticated album brings the best aspects of progressive folk, psychedelic pop and alternative country together in a way that is fresh yet nolstalgic. There are shades of artists who came to prominence in the '70s such as Jefferson Starship, Pink Floyd, Neil Young and Fairport Convention. But this band uses these influences to create something exciting." Julia Irwin, Preston Leader, August 2007
"We found your music to be moving and inspirational", Anna Sildever, Office of Senator Bob Brown, August 2007

Dust formed in Melbourne in late 2004, and produce a 'power-line pastoral' sound, combining the intensity and power of urban culture with psychedelic country melancholy referencing the sounds of nature and wilderness. We create a sound rich in texture and harmony, deep and lush, reverberating in dark spaces, invoking a movie soundtrack or the echo of a lost highway blues. And yet, it is music with a spiritual purpose, and a heightened mystical aura. All our songs are about love, heartache, death, the dark political times in which we live and the hope of redemption.
Our songs contain many elements: sacred music (Tibetan singing bowls, Indian harmonium, chant), Lucinda Williams’ style country-blues for crying into our drinks, This Mortal Coil's angelic singing and glittering guitar in gothic cathedrals, and the fire of The Band in a wild backwater bar. We also have songs that are folkier, presenting Nick Drake style acoustic guitar and madrigal enchantments. We can also sometimes be heard rocking out with extended instrumental pieces where Crazy Horse meets Tangerine Dream to produce a sustained, brooding, hypnotic mood.
We hunkered down from mid 2006 to concentrate on producing our first record, "Songs" "Songs" has been available since 13 August in all good Australian record stores and online at I-Tunes and other outlets. Copies are also available from our distributors Psy-Harmonics .
"Songs" journeys from emotionally intense guitarcapes reminiscent of Neil Young and Crazy Horse, to politically infused folk-rock, to ‘70s FM playlist ‘classic’ country influenced pop songs and much more. We recorded, arranged and produced the album ourselves in various Melbourne locations. We strove to recreate some of the magical mood of old 1970s vinyl. Tinges of Pink Floyd, Lynchian soundtracks and Texan psychedelia combine to create an album rich in texture, melodies and dream-like atmospheres.
The album features a diversity of styles such as the heavily nostalgic Turning Back (think Fleetwood Mac country pop meets Mamas and Papas dreaminess), gentle psychedelic folk madrigal The Child and late night listening melancholia of Set Apart. Interspersed between tracks are ‘found sound’ interludes- recordings we made of the dark ambience of Melbourne’s suburbia during autumnal twilight rambles. "Songs" is a gift from our hearts to you.
