JIANT

About Me

The Jiant was formed in 1996 at giant studios in midtown Manhattan. The first song they wrote they named giant. Then with their first show booked at queensborough community college, they had to come up with a name. A friend suggested they use the name of the song and it stuck. The auditorium was filled with about three hundred people and they played between a r&b singer and a hiphop act. The original Jiant lineup was Jeff Price, Joskee, and Omar Gordon. They played at underground venues from cbgb's to the Rockaway 116 boardwalk. Playing at all the essential downtown clubs at the time, the band played shows with bands born out of the bond street cafe scene where they originally met. During the bond street era Joe was playing in Blindside, a hardcore band from Queens, and Omar was in a heavy soul band when they met. Omar introduced Jeff Price into the Picture, and the Jiant was born. The Jiant sound was different from what was going on at the time musically in New York city. You could hear the Heavy Hendrix and Sabbath influence mixed in with Sonic Youth and the Velvet Underground. In 1998 they put out a three song disc called trigonometry. The band picked three songs that were all pretty different from each other. The next year before going to another recording session the band parted. Jeff left the band and moved out west. It was not known if they would continue. In September 1999 Dimi(formerly of Stillsuit) began to play drums with the Jiant. Soon after Manny(formerly of stillsuit) started to jam. What started as an experiment became a cool different phase of the Jiant. A different rythm section but a different attack on the music. The last recording was the self Titled "JIANT" and Featured "Hold it Down", FTI, and Coming back, released in 2003. The Jiant played their last show on August 12, 2003 with Funkface at Arlenes Grocery. The Jiant remains alive and the original members get together to play whenever the opportunity arises.
