I'm one half of the, near world famous, ZallaNayver.....Hello.....
This Myspace area is here for quite self-indulgent reasons, for years I have been recording tunes of various kinds, mostly experimental (too much Zappa at an early age, I think) and often not very good. But every once in a while I would come up with something interesting. Now with the internet providing a place to 'release' this type of un-commercial music I thought it was time to inflict my musical meanderings to the waiting world.
For a while there will be a selection of quite old recordings to offend your ears with. These were recorded with any equipment that I could beg or borrow and then documented on various low budget multi-track cassette recorders. This was from before I discovered the wonders of computers and even midi!!!
I am totally aware that there are some major Bloopers in some (if not all) of the tracks, but I liked to work quite quickly when I was writing/composing and once the idea was on tape I wanted to move on to the next project, always with the thought of going back and finishing the songs 'properly'....But after years of listening to the tracks as they were I realised that they WERE finished after all.
I REALLY hope you enjoy them. If you click on the 'lyrics' link for the track you are listening to there will be a little story/history of the track ... just to relieve the boredom.
STOP RIGHT THERE!!!!! I don't know about you but I can't get the 'lyrics' button to work so I have added some brief notes for the tracks below.
IDEA2: This tender piano piece is my first encounter with a real live sequencer, yes that's right I didn't play this one all the way through, but I did play all of the parts!! James and I wanted to give it the 'ZallaNayver' treatment but apart from an upgraded drum track we couldn't think of anything we could do to make it better so it stayed as it was.
Recorded using; Ensoniq sequencer, Korg X5D, Boss Drum Machine, Yamaha Multi-track recorder (cassette).
This track has been quite heavily compressed ... sorry
R W D: OK, let's get serious for a minute or three. I have always believed that the best music is a communication of emotions. This track was recorded on the night that I heard that my foster brother had committed suicide ... I did warn you this was serious .... I didn't sit down with the intension of writing this, in fact I thought that the whole process of busying myself in the studio would take my mind off of the sad news. It wasn't until a couple of days later, when I listened back to it that I realized it was a very accurate transcription of how I believed he was feeling at the time he died.
It was recorded on a very old and beaten up Fostex X15 (anyone remember them?). I recorded some fairly random notes on the keyboard and then wailed away on the guitar (no edits, no overdubs, second take) no drums. So I apologize for the self indulgence and the bad production and the hiss etc. But I hope you get it.
STOPGO: I've always enjoyed various NON-4/4 type of music and this was an early attempt of mine to jump on the 'irregular' bandwagon. For some strange reason this always makes me think of a bus journey through a city, all of those stops and starts without any real regularity. Another early 90's recording using just a drum machine that did bass notes as well as drums plus me and my trusty guitar. As with P=H below, the two guitars were recorded without hearing each other (I think there is a better way to explain this but I can't think of it at the mo), it's all Frank's fault. All aboard!!
P=H: I have always had a strange affection for 'accidental' music, Frank Zappa gave me the inspiration for the way this was recorded, sometimes he used to drop a guitar solo from one song onto a completely different song just to see what happened, so in this track I recorded the first solo in one take and then recorded the second guitar line without being able to hear the first one and although there are a couple of places where it didn't work I thought the way the guitars seem to harmonize (or not!!) was quite fascinating ... but then I am a bit odd!....(and I LOVE the drum track).
BREAK NECK: This is from my ROCK phase (actually I'm still going through my 'rock' phase, it's just that I listen to it rather than attempt to play it). I know it's not technically great, and it has no weee-diddley-diddley solo in it, but boy was it fun to play ... big smiles.
WANT TO BE MY FRIEND?..... Only if you're genuine.
I know this is going to sound all grumpy but please don't just add me so that your 'friends' counter looks impressive, or in any 'promotional' manner, I would imagine that the traffic here will be slow and so the returns on your hollow friend request would be slight.
But people of similar tastes/interests or any strange person(s) who actually likes the music here will be welcomed with open arms and a cheeky grin.
