MAAIKE MEKKING
“ THE GIRL WITH THE PERPETUAL NERVOUSNESSâ€
SPRING/SUMMER 2009 COLLECTIONIn her fourth season Maaike Mekking has continued her trademark of updating and reworking classics, and taken it to a whole new level, resulting in a collection that is at once directional and elegant, yet has a vibrancy that gives it a timeless edge. For this season Maaike bravely chooses to celebrate the dichotomy of structure versus volume. Beginning with the archetypal elements of men’s and women’s wear – as symbolised by the crisp shirt and the voluminous ballet tutu – she has taken this gender duality as a central thread to the collection as she subtly fuses and highlights the distinctions between the two, creating an ethereal yet discordant harmony.Inspired by her adopted city of London and urban cityscapes, the delicate colour palette is borrowed from a summer’s evening skyline, featuring peach, beige, grey and the sombre black of the buildings contrasting against the sunset. Raw embroidery at the periphery of graceful tulle explosions epitomise the paradox at the heart of the collection, while cotton drill and gabardine are feminised with billowing silks and delicate organza. Details such as deconstructed, disjoined collars and cuffs highlight the subtle conceptual aspects to Maaike’s design which refuse to detract from the ultimate wearability of her clothing. For her fourth show, Maaike has been selected to show as part of the newly-formed NOW Collective, a platform for inspirational young design talent which will showcase three chosen designers in innovative off-schedule shows each season. This inaugural NOW event will be at the heart of London’s East End, at Beach Blanket Babylon. Always inspired by the theatre of the catwalk, Maaike has worked closely with her muse, the Paris-based singer Johanna Wedin of Mai who will be covering the eponymous title song live during the show.Since completing a Women’s wear MA at the Royal College of Art, Maaike has gained coverage from The Guardian, Style magazine and I-D amongst others. Having previously worked for companies such as Alberta Ferretti, Aganovich and Alexander McQueen, she felt she had gained the experience to take the helm at her own signature collection. Her successful previous shows have been featured in such varied publications as Amelia’s Magazine, Zoo, Grazia, London Kicks, Fashion 156, War Magazine Interview and Nylon. Her label is stocked in stores in London, Rome and Paris. For further information and images please visit www.maaikemekking.com. For press enquiries contact Mélanie Crété
