London DJs Christov and Mal Crunch know the feeling of musical revelations well, the ethereal feeling of a well crafted tune and the experience in which that track is felt. Music has always been a huge part of their lives and they’ve devoted themselves to it. With this in mind and with vocalist Yeukai Makoni on board, the duo have embarked on a project that mirrors their own translation of their knowledge and experience, a musical dialogue and journey that they attribute to their very beings. Meet Brilliant59…Christov (guitar/vocals) an exotic and charismatic Frenchman, is a DJ, composer and singer. His musical career began playing in rock bands, but he found himself drawn to the Paris house music scene, establishing himself in a scene famous for such luminaries as Daft Punk and Laurent Garnier, and drawing influence and inspiration from this fertile scene. Alongside his journey as a budding DJ, he’s produced a diverse range of acts from France’s major hip hop collective IAM through to legendary African singer More Kante.Mal Crunch (sound/production), an English DJ and sound engineer, is the polarised antithesis of Christov; ice-cool, subdued and calm he started out as a bass guitarist of a punk band, and moved on to make his name DJing at top London clubs like Egg, Browns and the Wag. Mal also remixed the disco classic “You Got the Love” by Candi Staton at the request of fellow DJ Eren Abdullah. A quiet and reflective type, he also got involved in the back end of production, helping to design and build several recording studios, whilst tutoring musicians and DJs with a vast knowledge of music production.Yeukai Makoni (vocals) began her musical journey as a vocalist for The Bellagios who have toured with the Guiillemots and played venues like the Astoria, Dublin Castle, Purple Turtle, 93 feet east and Cargo. A trained dancer, actress and model, Yeukai shares a mutual passion for music made for the dance floor and the desire to make honest, good quality music. Her sublime vocal talent, underpins the band’s pop ethos and works in harmony with Christov and Mal’s vision to create accessible dance music.The idea for Brilliant59 came about at a chance meeting at an underground party – although juxtaposed in character, Mal and Christov connected over a mutual love of music. Sharing anecdotes and experiences, the unlikely partnership was bought about by one common theme - they wanted to bring back the spirit of fun, innocence of having a good time listening to house and electronica. Aside from this grand and bold spirit, they also dreamed of taking the music in a new direction at the same time. And so Brilliant59 was born.The partnership has proved to be a match made in heaven; the pair working seamlessly together, their contrasting styles and opinions finding a natural balance without compromising on creative energy so often sought within the over-saturated realm of electronic production. Finding harmony with the soulful vocals of Yeukai Makoni, the underground meets the commercially viable and the band produce a unique sound which touches on the raw essence of dance culture with an all encompassing pop aesthetic.
