About Me

i was force-fed great music since i was born. i was blessed with two parents that really loved to play music around the house. my dad, staying in touch with his roots, was always playing reggae. my mother was all about soul. she took me to see the jackson 5 when i was a wee lad. the whole family & friends went to see third world and peter tosh when i was around 9 or 10 (my first contact high). every saturday afternoon my mother would pump soul train and we'd dance around the house. most importantly, my mother always pushed me to play instruments. i couldn't get the trumpet's mouth piece when i was 9, but i liked the guitar at 11 and really liked it at 15 after hearing one of my best friend's play his ass off in his living room. he made me believe i can rock too and he showed me how. a year and a half later i was playing in my first metal band (warm water game fish). we never played out, but we did finish one song. i eventually picked playing the bass and wound up playing in a heavy alternative band called birdcage. i dont remember the transition from soul to metal, but it happened. it wasnt easy, black folks thought we wanted to be white, white folks thought we were trying to be white. we were just trying to listen and play good music. i always tell people, if you can listen to metal, you can listen to anything. metal made me appreciate musicianship. most of those cats wail! in our search (derek and i) for other cats that wailed, we started listening to jazz. i fell in love with john coltrane and eventually began to play tenor sax. i ended up playing in a funk band called dirty sneakers and eventually started taking lessons. i never gave up admiration for one genre over another. i listened to everything including dance music. in the early 90's a lot of my friends listened techno, then we started to feel house. i dug downtempo and acid jazz maybe a little more than my boys. a few of us went out to hear a dj and he was playing all the stuff i loved and we immediately clicked. that dj was nickodemus. we were buying practically the same music, accept i was buying cd's and he was buying records. years later he started his own party (turntables on the hudson)with fellow dj, mariano and percussionist, nappy g. he had me working the guest list for him for a few parties and eventually suggested that i play cd's in the lounge of the boat at the frying pan (where his party was). thus became dj eddy plenty. a few years down the road i stopped playing cd's and switched to vinyl (of course as soon as i switch, cd's and mp3's become the "in" thing to play). i've been playing with them for past 5 years and also at other various venues in nyc. i tend to play mostly house, salsa, afro beat, soul and downtempo. actually i play what i like. i'm currently working on music that i like and will be adding some tracks to this page soon, so check back. thanks and enjoy
