It is not "pity" that opens the gates to the most distant and strange types of being and culture to us, but rather our lack of partiality that does not empathize with or share suffering, but on the contrary takes delight in a hundred things that formerly led people to suffer (feel outraged or deeply moved). Suffering in all its nuances has become interesting for us... In this voluntary desire to contemplate all sorts of distress and transgressions, we have become stronger and more vigorous.Modern pessimism is an expression of the uselessness of the modern world-not of the world of existence.Principles have become ridiculous; nobody permits himself any longer to speak without irony of his "duty"...We hate pompous and hieratical manners, we delight in what is most forbidden, we should hardly have any intersest in knowledge if the path to it were paved with boredom...We consider passion a privilage, we consider nothing great unless it includes a great crime...We no longer love nature on account of it's "innocence" or "reason" or "beauty"; we have made it nicely "devilish" and "dumb". But instead of despising it on that account, we have felt more closely related to it ever since, more at home in it. Nature does not aspire to virtue, and for that we respect it... We do not demand beutiful illusory lies from art-brutal positivism reigns, recognizing fact without becoming excited."Mankind", does not advance; it does not even exist.
