District 97

About Me

Myspace Backgrounds District 97 was formed in the Fall of 2006 by drummer Jonathan Schang, keyboardist Rob Clearfield, bassist Patrick Mulcahy and guitarist Sam Krahn. The foursome, all who had attended the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, soon began creating a unique blend of progressive rock, metal, classical and jazz-influenced music. The band honed their approach as an instrumental unit for a year, before deciding that a great vocalist was needed to complete their sound. They found such a vocalist in 2007 American Idol Top 10 female finalist, Leslie Hunt. With the addition of Leslie in July 2008, the musical possibilities were infinitely expanded, and the new lineup hit upon a sound that has garnered the praise and participation of Chicago’s musical elite. Chicago Symphony Orchestra cellist Katinka Kleijn joined the band in September 2008, whose virtuosity on her instrument has prompted the band to push their musical limits even farther. Katinka was shortly followed by the wonderul Jim Tashjian, who has taken over guitar duties. Through shows at renowned Chicago venues such as the Tonic Room and Martyrs’, District 97 has attracted a rabid cult following. They entered the recording studio in November 2008, and will issue releases online and on CD in early 2009.Check out this video: Messiaen Metal
