I am here for Friends

About Me

HOW AM I NOT MYSELF?
My name is Marisa. I am a meat popsicle. I feed my sweet tooth and my mind wherever possible.
I collect things, I make lists, I analyse and obsess.
I am a geek and a half, a compulsive quotationist, a self-professed drama nerd and all around neurotic oddball.
I am easily confused and amused. I lack common sense. I often attract bewildered stares.
I would go the whole wide world for my friends and family.
I have an open mind until it comes to narrow minded people; then I'm just plain intolerant.
Insignificant as it is, I am still curious as to how other people see me.
When I say I have OCD, it probably isn't true, though it would explain a lot.
My skills of procrastination are my downfall, and are inextricably linked with my tendency to sabotage myself.
I wish I was braver and knew how to bring ideas to reality.
I don't yet know what I want to do with my life, in the larger sense, and there doesn't seem to be enough time to figure it out, let alone do it.
Clinical neuroses is the best way I can think of to explain why I am the way I am.
The jigsaw puzzle that is life continues to elude me. Yippe-ki-yay motherfucker!
LOVES: Lamp (also, carpet and desk), custard, white rooms, ear lobes, lying in bed listening to the rain, windy days, thunderstorms, Siberian huskies, the smell of musty old books, mushy babies and children whose parents have not allowed them to become horrid brats, mucking around & just being with my girls, uni friends, work friends, living to eat, reminiscing, the uni lifestyle in general, crimping, quotationism - particularly when it is spontaneous, making lists, mind expansion, parameters, idiosyncrasies, theatres & playhouses, people who accept me for all my strangeness, pondering, embarking on journeys of spiritual enlightenment (most often in the form of film therapy at Le Land Du South), performing arts, interconnectedness and realising it's all the blanket, believing in something, hugs, cooking, staircases, the idea of superpowers and superheroes, expanding my DVD collection, finding cool little shops in hidden alleys especially dingy bookstores in small town rest stops, fashion photography, run down carnivals, good conversation, jokes that make no sense, vintage shopping, op shopping, fields, swimming pools, watching One Tree Hill with my sister, me and my sister singing at the top of our lungs to our latest favourite music in her car, making cards, buying presents for people, the sense of touch, Flowerbomb, Crave, comedians & comediennes, violas, gallery hopping, people watching, art deco architecture (like The Astor & The Rivoli), the strange ways of the human psyche, the atmosphere in moviehouses, mythology, frangipanis, libraries, milkshakes & fries from a roadside diner (with a jukebox), hotels, ice cream parlours, burger joints, staying until the end of the movie, dilapidated houses, abandoned warehouses, fumes (just permanent marker, paint, nail polish & hairspray), being resourceful, reminiscing, funny t-shirts, shoes, stationery shopping, cupcakes, cleaning as therapy, grand romantic gestures, fireplaces, tea parties, having bendy thumbs.
LOATHES: Licorice, mushrooms, most seafood, social awkwardness, Trigger pants, Chartreuse, the sound of other people eating, being dehydrated, doctors who explain nothing and insist on being utterly useless, the lack of courtesy found in people who work in customer service and the fact that social conventions prevent me from slapping said people for their insolence, unintelligent debate, phonies, materialism, consumer whores (e.g. people who go to the movies to talk on the phone/open wrappers and then stand up to leave when the film has barely finished, brandlust, walking cliches, etc), when I fall into the trap of materialism/consumer whoreism, the fact that same sex marriage still hasn't been legalised globally, child beauty pageants, mess, spiders, bright colours in nature (except birds & flowers), ringing telephones, not being very good at cutting the fingernails on my right hand, crossing roads, try hard indie hipsters, people who say they are Wes Anderson fans for the elitist status they think they attain just by saying so; the corporate greed of evil corporationy corporations, the AMPTP, Connex, being 5'1" (the exact height for your nose to meet everyone else's armpits on the train), YouTube comments, TV shows that try to be "edgy" by using meaningless porn/nudity/swearing and then have a whinge about their late time slot and eventual cancellation, my weirdass ribcage, the Twat Pack, when people who I factually know like to read lie on their myspace about it because they think it's nerdy, people who genuinely believe that books have nothing to offer them, people who dismiss what they don't understand, people who put skanky photos of themselves on their myspace without considering that a 46 year old man named Ken from Clute, Texas is perving on them alone in his basement while his mother Lurleen prepares him breakfast - I know it's disturbing, that's the point, you have to think about these things before you air out your whoreishness on the Internet; people who put skanky photos of themselves on their myspace & then set their profiles to private under the impression that their friends and loved ones are interested in commenting on their breastesses, I'm afraid we don't care; posers (in particular, girls who take photos of themselves in the bathroom mirrors at Southland while telling each other how hot their myspace photos are and how they "just want to print them out and like, totally rape them..." No, seriously. No. Seriously.), the fact that my LOATHES list is longer than my LOVES one, when my juice wears tights, when the movie "Dune" is in my chocolate-y drink, bears who are attracted to women's periods, LOUD NOISES!
The rain to the wind said,
"You push, and I'll pelt."
They so smote the garden bed
That the flowers actually knelt,
And lay lodged, but not dead.
I know how the flowers felt.
("Lodged", Robert Frost)
Nun: You don't believe in God because of Alice in Wonderland?
Loki: No, "Through the Looking Glass". That poem, "The Walrus and the Carpenter" that's an indictment of organized religion. The walrus, with his girth and his good nature, he obviously represents either Buddha, or... or with his tusk, the Hindu elephant god, Lord Ganesha. That takes care of your Eastern religions. Now the carpenter, which is an obvious reference to Jesus Christ, who was raised a carpenter's son, he represents the Western religions. Now in the poem, what do they do... what do they do? They... They dupe all these oysters into following them and then proceed to shuck and devour the helpless creatures en masse. I don't know what that says to you, but to me it says that following these faiths based on mythological figures ensure the destruction of one's inner-being. Organized religion destroys who we are by inhibiting our actions... by inhibiting our decisions, out of... out of fear of some... some intangible parent figure who... who shakes a finger at us from thousands of years ago and says... and says, "Do it - do it and I'll fuckin' spank you."
Of all the ridiculous expressions people use - and people use a great many ridiculous expressions - one of the most ridiculous is "No news is good news." "No news is good news" simply means that if you don't hear from someone, everything is probably fine, and you can see at once why this expression makes little sense, because everything being fine is only one of many, many reasons why someone may not contact you. Perhaps they are tied up. Maybe they are surrounded by fierce weasels, or perhaps they are wedged tightly between two refrigerators and cannot get themselves out. The expression might as well be changed to "No news is bad news" except that people may not be able to contact you because they have just been crowned king or are competing in a gymnastics tournament. The point is that there is no way to know why someone has not contacted you, until they contact you and explain themselves. For this reason, the sensible expression would be "No news is no news," except that is so obvious it is hardly an expression at all. (Lemony Snicket)
"One's home is like a delicious piece of pie you order in a restaurant on a country road one cozy evening—the best piece of pie you have ever eaten in your life—and can never find again. After you leave home, you may find yourself feeling homesick, even if you have a new home that has nicer wallpaper and a more efficient dishwasher than the home in which you grew up, and no matter how many times you visit you may never quite cure yourself of the fluttery, homesick feeling in your stomach. Homesickness can even strike you when you are still living at home, but a home that has changed over the years, and you long for the time—even if such a time existed only in your imagination—when your home was as delicious as you remember. You may search your family and your mind—just as you might search dark and winding country roads—trying to recapture the best time in your life, so that you might cure your homesickness with a second slice of that distant, faraway pie, but your search will end in vain, as you have lost the map that told you where to turn, and the restaurant has long ago burned down, and the baker who made the pie has gotten tired of waiting for you and has devoted her life to making tomato paste instead, but she is no good at it, and now you are lost in life, the darkness closing in on you, with nothing but a sad flutter in your stomach and a sour acidic taste in your mouth." "PETA is a fantastic organisation. From their tireless crusade to ban cruel and unnecessary testing for medical experiments to their work at Disneyland, throwing blood on children who wear mouse ears. They do so many great things." (Jimmy Kimmel, Comedy Central Roast for Pamela Anderson)

My Interests

People and things - old and new | TV | Movies | Music | Sleep | Food | Reading | Performing arts | Theatre | Fashion | Visual arts | Being obsessed with things | Quotes | Making Lists | Expanding my comfort zone | Vintage scavenging | Trying to learn and experience as much as possible | Riding shotgun down a seemingly endless road listening to killer road music | Bestuff | Honing my skills of procrastination | Pretty much being a human Garfield

I'd like to meet:

Assuming time and space were no barrier... The boys of The Boosh (Noel Fielding, Julian Barratt, Michael Fielding, Dave Brown, Rich Fulcher, Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry), Gary Oldman, Antonin Artaud, Robert Frost, Jensen Ackles, Christian Bale, Wentworth Miller, Steve Carell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Wahlberg, Casey Affleck, Matt Damon, Michael C Hall, Emile Hirsch, Jean Smart, Sam Rockwell, Sarah Silverman, Creed Bratton, Beth Grant, Mia Timpano...

Music:

Indie, rock, folk, classic rock, art wave, new wave, no wave, psychedelica, electronica, old school. I also get easily addicted to score music, soundtracks and a mix of music from the 50s, 60s, 80s and 90s. I think house music serves its purpose but outside of that, it doesn't really interest me. Same goes for most pop and RnB. As a matter of principle, I try not to reject the mainstream outright because all music deserves a chance and every song means something to someone, somewhere. But for the most part, it's usually just not for me. So I've put the song that first made me fall in love with that band/singer in brackets. Take a hint, my music is cool and you should listen to it for yourself. Who knows? Lightning might strike...
