I remember the early days of this century, before the radioactive clouds. All of the major cities were still full of people. The streets were alive. Lights shone in every window. Colors were bright like neon. We laughed and danced on the rooftops of skyscrapers. We listened to Oh Halo.
I remember Julie Dicterow. She sang with human soul. Not the way androids perform today. She played a percussive instrument called a piano. She played it very emotionally, tilting her head and closing her eyes. I always dream of her that way, with her head tilted, listening, and her eyes closed.
I remember when Oh Halo released their first album in 2008 titled, Beautiful Egg on independent label Miles of Moonlit Records. It was produced by Ethan Allen of Gram Rabbit, who co-wrote “Cat Got Your Tongue” and “Beautiful Egg.” We loved that record. Cruising downtown, feeling the first rush of the evening and hearing Julie Dicterow’s voice was pure magic.
Ron Ulicny from the band Slow Signal Fade accompanied Julie on Beautiful Egg, and co-wrote “No es Mi Vida,” “Tonight Is,” “Francis Bacon,” and “Peter & the Wolf.” He played a string instrument called a guitar. You had to manually process a guitar sound by connecting it to a “pedal.” Ron used lots of pedals, and his sound was perfectly washed. Each string reverberated endlessly, like chimes in a temple. He layered rivers of harmonies and drifted on them, plucking out somnambulant melodies, dreaming his way through solos.
I even saw Oh Halo perform. I saw them in Los Angeles at The Derby, The Bordello, Tangiers and Spaceland. I will never forget the intensity of those performances. Deftly caressing their instruments and eyes closed, it was like they did not know we were listening, though there were many of us rapt in ecstasy. Their timing was tight and precise, but their souls were far away. They were too absorbed in bringing us pealing sunsets and marauding dawns to notice anything else.
There was something about Oh Halo that defined the time. They expressed the excitement we had for the future. Giovanni Messner’s genius video for the title track “Beautiful Egg” perfectly captured our spirit: the warmth and love…and also the hurt and loss. One unbroken shot, flowing as smoothly and sensuously as the song, glided through passionate love to tragic anger, and finally gave us trademark Oh Halo: a last glimmer of hope.
The darkness of our present day was foreseen by Oh Halo and echoed in their music; a somber shadow spinning through the light. Could they sense that someday we would live underground, hiding from the fallout? Sometimes I think they could. They taught us to protect hope, for it is precious and fragile. It is our beautiful egg.
Now when I listen I dream and remember. I remember the Earth the way it used to be: the warmth of the sun, the depth of the moon and human love. I remember the days of Oh Halo.
