The Fight for Fitch campaign was launched on March 6, 2007 by Rachel Holzer, Jennifer Swanson and Cheryl Hanna in the effort to bring the killer of this amazing animal to justice.
Fitch was a yearling colt that had spent the majority of his young life enduring the cruelty of people. At a very young age Fitch was bought by a killbuyer, and would spend his days awaiting slaughter. Luckily for Fitch and his friend Abercrombie, Pure Thoughts Horse and Foal Rescue along with the assistance of Another Chance 4 Horses were able to pull them from the killpen and give them a second chance at life...So they thought...Fitch and Abercrombie were brought to the Pure Thoughts Quarantine facility in Honeapath, SC. After Fitch arrived in South Carolina ,he became gravely ill with a severe URI that almost killed him. He began to put on weight and things were starting to look on the brightside, and then the unthinkable happened.
On Saturday March 4, 2007 someone attempted to steal Fitch and his friend Abercrombie from the quarantine facility. Fitch being as scared as he was did not want to go, so what these people did next was one of the most horrific crimes of animal cruelty I have seen. They dragged Fitch 150 feet down a concrete driveway. He was cut up; his hooves were worn down, his teeth broken, and his ribs separated. Fitch was once again left fighting for his life, a life that had been spared twice before. Tracy Steiger who had been caring for Fitch during his stay in SC, rushed him to the University of Georgia where a team of 12 did everything they could to save him. Unfortunately, on March 6, 2007 Fitch lost his fight and passed away at the University of Georgia. He was in the care of people that loved him and that is what matters most.
We intend to not let this go. Fitch may have lost the fight, but we will contiue to keep fighting for him and for the thousands of other horses that must endure cruelty at the hands of people. There has been a reward put out for the arrest of the person/people who have done this to him. We are trying to get all media involved in this cruel act. Fitch did not die in vain, he opened the eyes of many and not only did he save his brother Abercrombie he may have helped to save the lives of many other horses.
