About Me

Raphael Clarkson graduated from the University of York in 2008 with a first class degree, having studied Music.///He was born in 1987, London, to professional string-playing parents, and he owes much of his musical development and passion for music to their guidance and inspiration. Taking up the trombone at the age of eight, in the middle of an eight year stint on the ‘cello, he quickly grew to love this most versatile of instruments, developing an interest in jazz as well as classical music which still runs strong today. Solo opportunities with his school chamber orchestra accompanied the position of principal trombone of the London Schools’ Symphony Orchestra, before he began his studies at York. While studying there, he developed a wide range of musical interests. He has immensely enjoyed performing with the University Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Orchestra, Baroque Ensemble, Gamelan ensemble, Re:Impressions funk band, and Chimera new music ensemble; with the York Guildhall Orchestra, York Opera, York Railway Institute Brass Band, the Tatenda jazz group, Danny Gough's Nu York State and The Horn Identity Bands and many other small ensembles, having participated in the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Filey Music Festival and Jazz Weekend at the National Centre for Early Music.///He has received tuition on the trombone from Gordon Graham, Lindsay Shilling and most recently Barrie Webb, and jazz tuition from Mark Bassey, Dennis Rollins, Julian Arguelles, John Taylor, Scott Stroman, Keith Tippett and Chris Bachelor. He has also worked in a jazz education workshop at the NCEM in York alongside Dennis Rollins.///Last year he performed Takemitsu's Fantasma/Cantos II as a soloist with the University Symphony Orchestra, and is at this moment enjoying playing with Magic P and the Innuendos (Folk/Funk/Rock), and WorldService Project (Jazz/Funk/Rock) - check out their myspace pages! He is currently embarking on a 2 year MPHIL in Musicology and Performance at Oxford University, where he is playing with the University Orchestra and Big Band.
