A hard question for a former literature major. 9 Stories by J.D Salinger comes to mind as well as the 13 Clocks by James Thurber. I think everyone should have to read The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, a non fiction work about cross cultural issues and medicine. I read every night before bed and usually I choose a mystery
