KYMERA BIOGRAPHY
Born in South London, Ross Marshall AKA Kymera, and one half of Soul Purpose, grew up surrounded by a talent of musical siblings. His two sisters both being classically trained on the Piano and Violin, one of which is now a professional violinist, his father also being a singer in the Royal Philharmonic Choir spawned a natural progression into the world of music. He followed in the same classical route as his sisters eventually achieving grade 8 on the piano and grades on both the trumpet and the violin.
‘I’m lucky enough to have had this opportunity as a child as it’s giving me valuable attributes which I now use in the studio today. It's taught me a lot about the technical side of music and I'm grateful for having that knowledge at an early age. Apart from the classical influences whilst learning the piano my musical taste was more in the direction of hip-hop and acid house. My introduction to electronic music started when I discovered pirate radio stations like Pulse FM and Fantasy. The music they were playing was such a fresh new sound to what I’d heard before and it instantly got me hooked into the concept of mixing records together. I quickly developed a passion for Djing and got myself a set of belt driven turntables, probably because I couldn’t afford 1210’s at the time. I started playing on pirate radio station DON FM in South West London which lead to a series of big under 18’s raves in South London. DJing gave me a natural hunger for producing music so, through contacts on DON FM, I started going to a studio in West London, which was run by breaks producer ILS. After learning a lot of engineering skills and techniques from ILS I soon got myself a small studio setup. At the start of 2000, Kymera met up with Production House producer DJ Solo in his local record shop Chemistry Records in South London. They soon discovered a good blend of working practices together in the studio, with Mark (Solo) being really good at sourcing samples, arrangements and adding the more darker elements and Ross introducing the more musical influences to the table. One of the earlier tracks they wrote together was ‘Dominion’ (GLR056 - 2002). This was the start of 'Soul Purpose'. I also continued to develop my own style as a solo artist. ‘Secrets’ was the first track I released under the alias Kymera, this was later released on Progression Sessions 07 Live in Japan. That was followed it up with the singles ‘Second Season’ (LGR047) and ‘Following Forward’ (Studio X2) which were also signed up to the Good Looking camp.
After a number of releases under Kymera and Soul Purpose on both Good Looking and Looking Good, interest was soon picked up from other labels including Subject 13’s imprint Vibez Recordings and Nookie’s online only label Strictly Digital. Further successes included two releases featuring on Progression Sessions 10 Live in Germany for both aliases ‘This is Soul Mine’ and ‘Falling’ and also tracks on Vibez Recordings’ Sonar Project Volume 1, Good Looking Records’ Studio X1 and Strictly Digital’s Deeper Drum & Bass Series 2 & 3. After a few years working on other projects outside the Drum & Bass scene and also relocating to Dubai, Kymera is now back in the UK and has already completed remixes for US act ‘Anything But Mondays’ on Universal Records (U.S.) and Chris Jones on Diamond Records. Further releases include a remix of iconic legend Grace Jones’ ‘Love you to Life’ and also more of his own hybrid musical/dance floor Drum & Bass. “I’m basically influenced by anything that has soul and depth and that is well produced. I try and reflect this into my music and aim to achieve the perfect blend of using musical melodies and harder edged elements for the dancefloor. Drum & Bass is an amazing catalyst for many styles of music and is also limitless in it’s potential as a genre and I’m sure that it will continue to inspire people around the world for many years to come.”
