Johan Veldkamp's instrument, the vibraphone, is an instrument that is not heard very often – certainly not in Holland, the tiny European country where we live. Although the vibraphone is a beautiful solo instrument in it's own right and Johan Veldkamp plays in a way that you'll really enjoy those qualities, the vibraphone is also a percussion instrument. Sticks are used to produce sound, like a drummer would and in fact Johan is also a drummer and was trained in the music conservatory as such.
Now eminent guitar player Thomas Hilbrandie has joined the band. Thomas started playing guitar and piano very early in his life. In 2000 he finished his studies at the conservatory in Groningen and went on to study at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague, a study he successfully completed two years later. In 2004 he made it to the finals of the Dutch Jazz Competition of the North Sea Jazz Festival with the band „Rakia",a mix of Bulgarian folk, funk and jazz. In 2005 he was one of the eight finalists of the Gibson Montreux Jazz Competition, that was presided by Al Dimeola. He is very active in the jazz and Latin scene and has worked with the NNT, John Engels, Don Braden and Francien van Tuinen.
This quartet is completed by Philip Baumgarten on bass and Eddy Lammerding on drums – a very talented drummer, who has already played with John Ruocco and Barry Harris in his short career.
