The Musical Life of Simon Ross:
I first came across Dance music in 1999 after winning a local newspaper competition. I had won two compilation CD's featuring music from the party island, Ibiza. Ever since that day I had taken a strong interest in this particular genre. Over the years a collection of compilation CD's and artist albums grew on the bedroom shelves. Many years of listening to these CD's inspired me to try mixing music for myself in the later months of 2005.
Inspired by DJ's such as Paul Van Dyk and Tiesto, I bought mixing software for my computer and taught myself how to use all of it's components whilst producing a number of compilation CD's along the way. With each compilation I produced, I also created covers to go alongside each mix giving me an insight into all the aspects of the production.
2 years later I began to start remixing and editing records produced by other DJ's aswell as compiling them into CD's. At first I stayed within my comfort zone and decided to remix Trance records such as my remix of Tiesto - Lethal Industry. Then I started to take requests from supporters leading me into new areas that I had previously given no attention such as my remix of Feeder 'Lost and Found'.
Just as I was when I started mixing music, I am still learning, and I learn something new each time I come away from the computer.
Within the first few weeks of 2008 I acquired my first set of equipment. I had been bought a set of MP3 turntables that are specially designed to work alongside my DJ software. Any movements on the equipment are shown on the computer monitor which can be very helpful in last minute situations. They also allow me to use music straight from my computer making a 'plug in and play' system each time. A strong investment for any potential DJ.
It was at the start of March 2008 that I broke into the large world of DJ'ing professionally. My first radio appearance was on 'Galaxy FM' in Yorkshire as part of the 'Uploaded' show on Saturday mornings. This was a huge step forward and took minimum effort to produce a high quality mix-set.
The following week, I managed to get my bootleg 'Fly To New York' on BBC Radio 1, Europes number 1 radio station. After many weeks of talking to world famous DJ Judge Jules, he was finally convinced that there is huge potential in my skills. This particular bootleg has been tried and tested by the Judge himself along with many other DJ's all around Britain.
New releases are being churned out from myself whenever the opportunities arrive, and the awareness of my skills is rapidly increasing. DJ's everywhere are talking about what I can do and the quality of production. A promising sight for the future.
Keep your eyes pealed for more appearances from myself in your nearest club, and on your favourite radio stations. I am moving forwards very very quickly!
