Steam Up !

Irish traditional music

About Me

Information in French about Steam Up ! is available here .

In 1995, Yves-Antoine played some Irish traditional fiddle for a Chrismas show given by his daughter's infant school. He was noticed by a music teacher who introduced him to Hubert and Catherine, who had respectively just taken the pipes and the fiddle.

Later, Nicolas, Arnaud , and Ross joined Steam Up!, bringing a wide sound palette into the group.

In April 2008, Karen Gossart, who had played with us in sessions for the last two years, fully joined the group.

We all live in villages around Fontainebleau, 70 km south of Paris: most of our gigs take place in this area, where we have two regular outings at the beginning of each month: on the first Sunday afternoons in la Tête des Trains at Tousson, and on the first Tuesdays nights in le Glasgow at Fontainebleau.

Once a year, we stay together as a group in the West of Ireland for a week, in order to take a huge breath of tradition and improve our music. In 2007, we stayed in West Kerry, near Dingle where we were happy to meet plenty of musicians, including Aoife Granville .

Influences:

Each Steamupper has his/her own influences. For example, Hubert’s influences are pipers like Liam O’Flynn, or younger ones like Robbie Hannan. Yves-Antoine’s main fiddle idol is Bríd Harper Rafferty originally from Donegal. Ross is also part of a jazz group , and his choice of harmonies on the guitar sometimes comes from there, etc.

As far as groups are concerned, we like Céide ...

One of their descendants is an outstanding fiddler:

Síofra Nic Aodha, Under-18 Fiddle competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2006 - The King of the Pipers

Síofra Nic Aodha, Under-18 Fiddle competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2007 - The Drunken Sailor

We also like Cran .
