Skanu mežs

Adventurous music festival Skanu Mezs/Sound Forest/Klangwald was started in the pretty and decaying Riga Theatre and Music museum (only music artefacts to find there were old pianos) on September 2003. Wish was to create an event in Riga where a bit more challenging music is played than most places. Before that we had for three years organised concerts in co-operation with a couple of alternative music clubs/beer cellars. It had to end though - too many interesting musical ideas had to be discarded in face of the commercial reality that the clubs faced. We stoped begging/coaxing those establishments into inviting artists that they knew they were going to loose money and started the festival. Lately the festival has acquired some kind supporters and we do not need to loose our own money anymore. And again like before, one club - Pulkvedis (or Colonel - homage to Gabriel Garcia Marques story 'Nobody Writes to the Colonel') - has given us a shelter. The first club to do it back in 2000 was club called Metro - now Depo - and we are gratefull for that.
