ZAYLAN

About Me

ZAYLAN was born in the U.S.Virgin Islands but has lived most of his life in New York where he currently resides. At an early age Zaylan tuned into the sounds of such well known 70's artists as Roberta Flack,Tavares,Gloria Gaynor,Jimmy Cliff and Al Green, so it's easy to see where his strong love for melodic dance music comes from.In the late 80's Zaylan recorded his first demo, a haunting song entitled Let it out, a song the artist says was written like a mysterious love story of a young man trying to encourage the one he loves to learn to trust him and the world again..but in fact, the song was about Zaylan himself, who went through many periods of insecurity while growing up..and struggled to find his place in the world. Producing the song (which was intended to be an 80's style dance track, but instead was restyled as an 80's style pop rock song) affected and empowered the singer on many personal levels, while creatively, it introduced the singer/songwriter to a musical style different from his own: New wave and Pop Rock. His collaborations with musician Paul Mutineer were compared to such acts as Erasure, Eurythmics,The Escape Club and the late Micheal Hutchence of Inxs.Eventually Zaylan drifted back to his musical roots with the 90's strong House music influence..but instead of a return to the studio the performer found himself releasing his inhibitions (and, as he says, encouraging others to do the same) on the dance floor at numerous New York night clubs. Of noteworthy mention is Brooklyn's now defunct nightclub: Spectrum. He fondly recalls going there on weeknights when "absolutely no one was there but the staff, or you could count the amount of people on the dance floor with two hands". He'd get on the dance floor ,by himself, as the DJ played on and on and after hours of working up a major sweat he would leave somewhat embarrassed at his display..only to return the following week for more. The late 90's found the artist back in the studio again to record a second demo which included two tracks that are well known to local Zaylan fans: The Rain (a sensual easy listening alternative track) and Someday Soon (Zaylan's first House track). The response to these two songs was so strong that when the artist even dared to think of putting aside his musical aspirations, he couldn't. After all, the lyrics to both songs are about self-renewal and never giving up on your dreams despite the circumstances (and what kind of message does that send?..). By 2003,after recording more demos and performing at local spots Zaylan re-teamed with musician Keith Kemper, who did production for his 1998 demo. A demo (cover art, pictured left) entitled THE SOUND OF ZWAYLAN was produced. (*Zwaylan was the artist's stage name at the time*) Promotional cuts got some club play from well known DJs Mike T. Brown, Frankie Deluxe and the legendary Warren Gluck. The response prompted the the artist to zone in on select songs to remix and in the spring of 2005 Zaylan released his first Indie CD NOTHING LEFT FOR YOU HERE (cover art, pictured right) with the tech-house mixes of "Nothing Left.." by David Aaron, Alex Aliferis and Keith Kemper. The CD also includes four additional tracks of different Zaylan songs which would classify the disc as both a Maxi-single and an EP.Zaylan is currently promoting a new single BLESSED BY YOUR LOVE featured on his new CD ZAYLAN SOUND:VOLUME ONE released under the artist's independently owned music label Fuzemix Records. Future plans include songwriting with and for other artists and collaborating with new up and coming (as well as well -established) remixers, producers and musicians for future dance music releases of all styles.
