In the song, West Coast Two Step, by Your Majesty, there’s a line in which lead singer D’ant sings, “Mob, we’ve been prepared, and it ain’t at all absurd.†What I get from that is that Your Majesty is a band connected through more than music; it is a family. This is most evident in their stage show, arguably the best I’ve seen in the in the Inland Empire area. You can easily ascertain that they love like a family, fight like a family, compromise like a family, and play like the best bands you’ve ever seen live...no question. I am going to attempt to describe this dynamic group of men and young lady.Imagine Prince, Jimi Hendrix, James Jamerson, Keith Moon, Maceo Parker and Aretha Franklin formed a super group. Your Majesty is probably as close to sounding like that band, had it ever existed. From the bottom up, this band is all about rhythm, because the foundation of Your Majesty is funk. While it is obvious that there is a huge P-Funk/ James Brown/ Prince influence, there are prominent elements of rock in the music as well. Hendrix, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin particularly come to mind. All things considered, they still remain strikingly original and unique, mainly because of the single saxophone element provided by Helios and the sweet, yet jagged vocal stylings of D’nez Whitman. All of this is glued together by their stage show, which is probably the closest thing to James Brown in his prime that any concert-goer is going to see, bar none.At the very core of Your Majesty is the rhythm section of Yosha Phillips on drums and Ricky Giner on bass, who together serve as a funk/ rock generator, powering the group and laying down a solid foundation for guitarist Sam Rufus. What separates Sam from most guitarists is that he serves as a member of the rhythm section because of his innate rhythmic style, yet his soloing is so hypnotic that it transcends the entire band at times. This all sets the stage for lead singer D’ante, a soul gem reminiscent of Prince and James Brown in terms of influence, yet original in terms of raw talent. As a powerhouse performer, anything less than a powerhouse band would have stifled D’ante, and a powerhouse band is exactly what they are, collectively. Both their recordings and performances are a pleasure, and it is my opinion that given the opportunity, they will one day become seen in the same light as The Rolling Stones or Prince. Do yourself a favor and see them live. Yes people, it’s true, Your Majesty is that good.
