MEZCLA

About Me

IN ENGLISH:
Mezcla has been one of Cuba’s hottest bands since it’s birth in 1985. The name, “Mezcla” means mixture. Cuban jazz, Afro Cuban rumba, Cuban rock and son, or what the world sometimes calls salsa are mixed with what Cubans call “new song”, or “intelligent songs” in a very unique way that has evolved and grown every year since.
Mezcla has toured the world and recorded a number of albums and hit songs and participated in Jazz festivals, Rumba festivals, Rock festivals, New Song festivals, Latin-American Music festivals, World Music festivals, and has been part of the sound track of the last 20 years of the Cuban musical world.
Mezcla is a seven piece band: guitar, piano, bass, drums, trumpet, sax and Afro Cuban percussion, (including “bata´” drums). Their repertoire consists of original compositions and songs by Cuba’s most interesting young song writers and innovative compositions in the traditional Afro Cuban styles, alongside Yoruba chants over 500 years old.
Mezcla is Cuban music of today, well aware of the roots that have made Cuban music move the world, but also aware of the world young Cubans live in now.
Mezcla plays a few times a month in Havana at the legendary jazz club La Zorra y el Cuervo, where the jam sessions have had musicians like Dafnis Prieto, George Benson, Yosvany Terry, Chucho Valdés, Roy Hargrove, Orlando Sanchez, Felipe Cabrera, Steve Coleman, Wynton Marsalis, Giovanno Hidalgo – but to mention a few of those who drop in - both during the Havana Jazz Festival (Jazz Plaza) as well as almost any night...
Mezcla has played numerous festivals: Dominican Republic Jazz Festival; Barranquijazz, Colombia; Jazz Plaza, La Habana; Festival Internacional de Jazz de Manizales, Colombia; Gourmet Jazz Festival, St. Martin; Cayo Coco Jazz Festival, Cuba; Bliss Festival, USA; Grass Roots Festival, USA; Mariannensplatz Festival of World Music, Berlin; Skagen Festivalen, Denmark; Karrebaeksminde Jazz Festival, Denmark; Hafenfest, Hamburg, Germany; One World Music Festival, Køln, Germany; Caribbean Arts Festival, Santiago de Cuba
