poetz.comFader Magazine vs. Pretty Please -- For years Fader Magazine has been the undisputable bible for New York’s racial melting pot of hipsters. Its content struck a strategically-planned middleground by covering floppy-haired rockers, dreaded neo-soldiers and Italian photographers. The Fader formula was easy to spot: unroll a photo series of Jamaicans being dope, interview the Still over PBRs and enlist an all-star cast of advertisers. But this past fall, no doubt during a jizz-spouting bender of self-masturbation brought on by its own glossy pages and Levi-Cornerstone-financed bashes, The Fader alienated New York’s fashionistas and downtown tastemakers and lost its Billyburg and Faux-Faux Greene street cred. With the Fader plummeting back down to the ranks of YRB Magazine and 1999 issues of Shout, New York became a power vacuum for hungry hipster editors. The Pretty Please Zine struck down all competitors by packing its pages with tantalizing poetry, delightful vegan recipes, shoddy photography and a list of New York’s best popcorn venders (“at the movies!â€). Pretty Please’s one-woman editorial staff has attracted swarms of glassy-eyed devotees with her casual writing style, affinity for laymen’s terms and intimate relationship with The Giraffes.
