Cranberries Videography
As for movies (below), I just can't make a list of what I listen to and
be happy with it. I'm very open minded, I listen to virtually every
genre there is and I love discovering new stuff all the time, so it's
quite pointless to list everybody. Let's say my first real musical
crush was with The Cranberries
something like ten years ago. Sadly and luckily at the same time, they
broke up in 2003, so after some grieving I sailed to other islands and
began a never ending trip. I discovered I adore musical blends, the
stranger the better, so for instance I fell in love with Nightwish 's opera-metal, Gotan Project 's tango electronica, Haggard 's medieval driven metal, Apocalyptica 's infernal cellos, Dresden Dolls '
Brechtian punk cabaret what the hell that means. I kind of like
everything which incorporates folk music from anywhere, better if mixed
with something else (the crazy Gogol Bordello , Germany's Die Apokalyptischen Reiter , the lovely Loreena McKennitt , Israel's Orphaned Land ).
Female fronted metal bands are generally quite enjoyable, though
sometimes predictable (Nightwish are still my all time favourite even
with Anette Olzon on vocals, the constantly-changing Gathering are next behind them, Within Temptation , Lacuna Coil , the early After Forever and Epica ). My indie rocker side likes Interpol , Franz Ferdinand , Editors , Kasabian and such like. I love Muse to death and 90s grunge/alternative rock from Nirvana , Hole , Pearl Jam , Smashing Pumpkins , Garbage and so on as well. Trip hop was and still is pure genious ( Massive Attack and Portishead are Gods, no matter what). Insane solo projects ( Nine Inch Nails , The Real Tuesday Weld ) and bizarre superbands ( Therion , Trans-Siberian Orchestra , A Perfect Circle , This Mortal Coil ) are usually fucking great. Industrial and Tanz-Metal makes me headbang (would you believe me if I told you Rammstein are the reason why I'm
studying German?). I love electronic/house music as long as it is something more than dull noise
(I'm referring to acts such as Röyksopp ,
The Knife ,
Moloko ,
Death in Vegas ).
I don't deny I like pop music when properly made ( Mika , Shiny Toy Guns , even Madonna ), especially if coming from or being inspired by 80s' new wave/electropop/whatever.
What else? Baustelle , the current big thing of Italian indie, who I consider the finest band from my country right now.
All time top favourite
There used to be an extremely long list of movies here. I decided it was time to axe it when while watching films I kept asking myself: "is this worth of being included in that list? and if so, why?". You know, the kind of paranoia only a film-addict experience.
So I guess I'll stick to broad categories to describe what I do like in the celluloid world. Take notes, if you're willing to take me to the movies.
To begin with, I worship virtually anything born from the sick minds of Quentin Tarantino , David Cronenberg and Tim Burton . I also love to death the works of Paul Thomas Anderson , the Coen brothers , Alejandro González Iñárritu and David Fincher .
I deeply appreciate the so-called "American independent" genre, movies shot with non-existant budgets (such as El Mariachi and Clerks ) included. I think there are some gems and some higly talented directors among them, plus I prefer watching something more down to earth with a soul than supersonic special effects without any real story behind.
I love black comedies and dark humour in general, to the extent that it's pretty much the only thing which makes me laugh in a film (I'm not into the slapstick kind of humour at all, sorry). My favourite black comedies pusher has to be Wes Anderson , the genious behind Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums . Greg Pritikin ( Dummy , Totally Confused ) is next behind him.
Tightly connected with the above are the portraits of dysfunctional families, such as the ones in Running with Scissors , Little Miss Sunshine , The Addams Family and the Tenenbaums themselves. I love them all as much as I hate the false and conventional "American dream" household.
Crime stories which makes you feel for the criminals rather than for "the good ones" are beautiful. Anything Tarantino's of course, but also Léon , Goodfellas , Scarface , Natural Born Killers . Believe it or not, I love judiciary dramas as well, such as Coppola's The Rainmaker and Forman's epic The People vs. Larry Flint .
Though not having tried any substance so far, I discovered I like drug-related movies an awful lot. Trainspotting , Drugstore Cowboy , Blow , the one and only Requiem for a Dream . Kids , too. I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of other great ones.
Films dealing with sex issues without neither reinforcing prejudices nor being little more than soft core pornography. The best (and most extreme) example of what I mean is Shortbus , a movie which really meant a lot to me and I strongly encourage anyone to see. Yes, there are tons of explicit sex scenes, but they are functional to the plot and in the end you feel passionate towards every character. Many deem it porn, I think it's a piece of art instead. Other sex-centered films I love include Secretary , Y tu mamá también , Cronenberg's Crash , The Dreamers , the classic sex, lies, and videotape . Among all the gay-themed movies I suggest the moving Bent , starring an excellent Clive Owen.
Non-linear storytelling and intertwined storylines, when properly done, are just brilliant. I'm thinking of Memento , the two instalments of Kill Bill , 21 Grams , Elephant , Lola rennt , Cidade de Deus , just to name a few.
Twist endings most times really turn me on. I won't spoiler much here, but people, the first Saw . God, what a finale. Fight Club equally shocked me the first time I had seen it.
Music video directors transferring their insanity to the big screen: Michel Gondry ( Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ), Spike Jonze ( Being John Malkovich ), Jonas Akerlund ( Spun ). I adore their mindfuck works.
Dystopic science fiction films, which are also the only form of sci-fi I can stand: Brazil , Dark City , Children of Men , V for Vendetta , The Matrix , eXistenZ . I could watch them for hours.
Musicals, I don't watch many of them but I must say they fascinate me quite a lot. Chicago , Moulin Rouge! , Hedwig and the Angry Inch . A couple of New Year's Day ago I stayed awake until the thousandth overnight reruns of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Jesus Christ Superstar were over. Oh, and I grew up learning the lyrics of The Nightmare Before Christmas by heart (by "I grew up" I mean I was 6 when it came to theatres and I instantly fell in love with it).
Stuff done decades ago which is still astonishing nowadays. What, Orson Welles did that in 1941? Chaplin did that the year before? Kubrick did Dr. Strangelove in 1964? Polanski did Rosemary's Baby in 1968? And so on and so forth.
Anything with the power of making me cry or almost so (which isn't a easy task): Donnie Darko , 25th Hour , Hotel Rwanda , Big Fish , Million Dollar Baby , American History X , (again) Requiem for a Dream and Bent .
Satirical stories and clever spoofs, such as Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz , Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! , the Tarantino/Rodriguez joint Grindhouse . The aforementioned (love this word) Spun is another perfect example of this.
Some old Disney movies like Alice in Wonderland , The Sword in the Stone , Robin Hood and Mary Poppins . And the more recent albeit unique Who Framed Roger Rabbit .
Lost | Six Feet Under | Prison Break | Brothers & Sisters
