"...Man to Man is a pungent, disturbing, electrifying solo show about an ordinary working class woman, who survives the Germany of the Weimar Republic and of Hitler..."(Joyce McMillan, The Guardian)
An old man retells his life: from carefree girl to crane operator, from young bride to soldier, from femme fatale to farm lad; Man to Man is an epic story of identity-switching in the fight for survival. Inanimate objects from the sparse set take on purpose as chairs become the bones of a finished meal or body of a dean man and lamps transform into other characters. This one-woman show that spans 50 years and includes a cast of more than 20, aged 8 to 80, is an adventure in the power of story and personal transformation.

About the Play:
Man to Man examines gender and politics, interweaving the personal story of Ella Gericke with the great political upheavals of twentieth century Europe. Written in 1982 by German playwright, Manfred Karge, this poetic monologue tells the story of a woman who, in the face of destitution, decides to take on the identity of her dead husband and returns to work in his place as a crane operator. Taken for a man, she is completely enthralled by the way men behave when away from women, particularly the rough, working-class men she impersonates. The play begins in Weimer Germany before WWII and travels through history to take us into a small flat in East Germany some 40 years later. In her various disguises throughout, Ella Gerickle serves as a soldier during the war, and works on a farm and then a factory, and manages to even fall in love, as a man.
Spanning 50 years of history, with a cast of at least twenty, aged 8 to 80 and of both sexes, Man to Man is one-woman show of limitless possibility. The role, famously taken on by Tilda Swinton in the 1992 film version, is a demanding feat of chameleon-like metamorphosis, requiring dozens of characters to be played by the one performer.I edited my profile with Thomas' Myspace Editor V4.4
