If John Cusack identified pop music as a series of “heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss,” in High Fidelity then Swivelhead stride their torrent of extreme emotional rock right into that ring.
Blasting out of Sydney, Swivelhead mix a heady cocktail of melodic hooks in their rock tunes and songwriter Melissa Perry lays it all on the line with lyrics about betrayal, love, obsession, denial all wrapped up in issues about friends, family and life. This frontwoman is not afraid to delve into the dark and Swivelhead are right behind her with edgy riffs and thumping groove.
Swivelhead started their journey as Undertow in 2003 when Melissa Perry and Clinton Harn (drums) joined forces and started gigging around Sydney with Ryan Van Gennip (Chase The Sun) who played bass on the record, but has now been replaced by Jack Richards on the bass as Chase The Sun's touring schedule became too much. Jack adds a dynamic energy to Swivelhead's stage, often getting down to his underwear during gigs!
When it came time to write a full length album, Swivelhead took it seriously. They spent hours every night and most of their weekends writing a large volume of songs to take with them to the studio where Clinton engineered the album himself. The result is a stadium sound like Audioslave mixed with the brooding of Tea Party with the guitar stylings of Jimi Hendrix.
Swivelhead are all about strong riffs. Melissa cut her teeth on guitar and vocal skills at festivals and talent quests throughout New South Wales and Queensland, winning a swag of junior championships since the age of 8. She studied guitar at Southern Cross University in Lismore for three years with guitar legend, Jim Kelly, dreaming of becoming a lead guitarist like Eric Clapton or Bonnie Rait.
Clinton Harn brings his own swag of drumming experience to the band having played with The Myall High Club, Steve Edmonds, Charlton Hill, Candice Alley, Heval and The Noll Brothers, appearing at the ARIA awards and various TV programs such as Rove,The Footy Show and many more.
With Jack Richards and Peter Mulas now completing the lineup, Swivelhead are ready to rock their debut album onto stages all over Australia.
