Pena, who creates his own song cycles and is a studio artist, began his informal study of the piano while a student at the Kansas City Art Institute and School of Design. Pena is formally trained as photographer and printmaker. He has adapted much of the same creative process he uses in the visual arts to his approach to the piano, layering the delicate and bold tones of the piano, as a photographer captures light and shadow or a printmaker uses the subtle mixture of inks to create tonality and space. Pena's spontaneous piano compositions are original, based on an intuitive and instinctive development process. All Things in Reverse" is Pena's debut work of piano sonatas. It consists of eight tracks of original instrumental music by the solo artist. The album expresses musical vistas of inverse spatial and time order and disorder. The music has been described as invoking classical themes of melancholy and beauty expressed through the dynamic range that is uniquely the piano. Richard and his wife now resides in Raleigh, North Carolina.
