David Hein

About Me

"One of Toronto's undiscovered gems."
- Chart Magazine

Singer/songwriter David Hein writes high-energy acoustic rock strapped to rapid-fire lyrics and a truckload of soulful heartache. Known for his catchy hooks and solid songwriting, Heins music and infectuous live energy have earned him comparisons to Blue Rodeo, Counting Crows, John Mayer and Dave Matthews. Heins songs are urban, short stories about lost loves, lost travelers and lost time but paired with open, optimistic promises of change.
"The night ended with the David Hein Band, playing sweet acoustic guitar... A fine singer songwriter with a good band, sophisticated arrangements, catching melodies. The David Hein Band earned their place in the finals."
- Emergenza.net

The winner of the International House songwriting contest and a finalist in Chart Magazine's Indiestartup contest and Paragon's singer/songwriter contest, Hein and his band have packed venues in both Canada and the USA. Out of hundreds of Toronto bands, they were audience picked to be Canadian finalists in the Emergenza Festival. Heins music has been played in packed clubs across Ontario and New York, as well as on CBC radio and webradio.
"An incredibly talented guy."
- Rita Peruggi, Producer,The Jim Henson Company

For two years, Hein apprenticed in a Muppet Music studio in NYC, working for Jim Henson, Disney and Sesame Workshop. Now based in Toronto, Hein has formed a tight four piece band, released a live recording from Torontos Cest What, and has just released his debut studio album, NORTH OF NOWHERE, produced by Juno-award winning producer, Joe Dunphy, and featuring performances by Lyle Molzan ,(Jann Arden), Tim Bovaconti (Ron Sexsmith), and Greg Johnston (Canadian Idol). Band Members: David Hein (lead vocals, acoustic guitar), Dan Surman (lead guitar), Jeff Daze (bass/acoustic), Sean Doyle (bass), Clark Allore (drums)
Influences: Folk music, sung by my family on beaches; John Mayer; Comic books; Jack Johnson; My cat, Marty; Blue Rodeo; good people doing good things; Barenaked Ladies; alliteration and rhyme; Danny Michel; freshly fallen snow at midnight; Counting Crows; my songwriting friends and my friends who like songs.
Sounds Like: People say I sound like: John Mayer, Dave Matthews, Blue Rodeo, Jack Johnson, Danny Michel, Counting Crows, The Band, Barenaked Ladies, The Trews... Here's what some press say:
"It is clear that his songs are designed for an electrified rock and roll band, but his songwriting is such that it easily translates to an acoustic-and-vocal set-- think the Barenaked Ladies meet the Trews. "
