About Me

Born and raised in Nebraska, johnnieboy started out playing the trumpet in the school band when he was thirteen. After seeing James Brown on Soul Train he became fascinated with the bass and started copping licks from old funk and soul records. He hooked up with a nappy band called Bootyfest and played 70's soul covers in clubs around the midwest. Tired of that scene he made his way to New york and ended up in the East Village. One of his musician roommates had some recording software on his computer so johnnieboy started cutting up drum loops and laying down greasy grooves with his homemade cornflake bass. He added some Steve Cropper guitar licks and keyboard overdubs and ripped some wacked out distorted vocals using a toy tape recorder. He circulated his tapes to some DJs around NYC and his track Origami started getting airplay on some college radio stations. This song attracted the attention of Headshop Records who signed him and released his debut album. Check it out at: www.headshoprecords.com or on iTunes
