Liverpool group Urban Strawberry Lunch have been working at the "bombed-out church", Leece Street, as Artists in Residence 2007-2009, presenting - Exhibitions, ‘Unplugged Gigs’, Poetry, Performance Art Theatre and Film screenings within the interior of the church, bringing the space back to life through the arts.
Urban Strawberry Lunch will continue the residency until the end of 2009. Please get in touch if you would like to present your work at "the bombed out church"
USL are working to regenerate "the bombed out church" through using the arts as an engine of change. On days when there are no events programmed, the "Bombed out Church" is opened by USL as a Heritage Tourist Site, providing open access to the public.
Urban Strawberry Lunch at St Luke’s, provides a cultural haven and artistic outlet for the whole city of Liverpool.
St Luke’s Church (built in 1831 by John Foster and John Foster Jr) was ‘bombed out’ on 5th May 1941 during the Second World War Blitz on Merseyside. Since then its shell been closed to the public its ruined and abandoned state a curiosity at the heart of the city of Liverpool.
In 2003 Urban Strawberry Lunch launched their Finest Hour project, comprising of two parts:
the compilation of a sound archive, preserving the memories of those who witnessed the Blitz (Finest Hour Liverpool Blitz Sound Archive)
a yearly event at St Luke’s commemorating the anniversary of its destruction.
The annual events at St Luke's proved very popular and in April 2007 USL began working at St Luke's on a daily basis.
Entry is free but a voluntary by donation is our chief source of income and helps us keep this magnificent building open to the public.
