(in Italy at the moment.. :) )
Dutch from origin, but now living in lovely Bradford.. The first time I came to England was a few years ago on a cycle holiday (just me and my bike) through the South East (Kent mainly). I very much liked what I saw, so I kept coming back! In 2003 I started a course (Archaeology & Prehistory) at the University of Amsterdam. I did like the fieldwork, but I did not like the rest of the course at all. Just before the start of the 2nd year I decided to quit. I went to back to England, stayed with some good friends and worked for them. After a few months I came to the conclusion that I did want to do a university course, but not in Holland. In England! You may think "of all places, why come to Bradford?". Simple, the University of Bradford offered the course I wanted! Been here for a year and a half now, and Bradford really isn't as bad as its reputation suggests. The city itself might not have all that much to offer, but a 10 minute drive will get you to some stunning countryside with lovely picturesque villages!
Apart from my interest in history and archaeology I've always felt a strong affection for the more creative professions. At the time of choosing what I was going to study I (and my parents) thought it was wise to do something academic. So instead of doing music, fine art or photography I decided to do Archaeology.. I was told I would never be good enough to make a career in music or art anyway, so I was just going to keep them as a hobby next to my course. Things didn't quite work out like that. I've hardly made any photographs or produced any paintings since then. And I almost completely gave up on my music. My dreams of mastering the piano and the violin and/or viola, of composing my own music and of conducting an orchestra were completely forgotten (or suppressed).
But during the first few months of this academic year two people at the Music Centre of the University gave me back my dreams! I managed to save up enough to buy my own piano (had one at home in Holland, but not here in England), and I was determined to make them come true. Unfortunately I lost faith again..
There's a good chance that I'll never have the guts to make the jump and ignore all the concerns and just devote my life to music (with history as a hobby).
But after last night's (1st March) concert in Manchester I’ve got my inspiration back, so who knows, I might just “change my stars†and make my dreams come true after all! :-)
Finally started to play the violin! :-)
