I am here for Networking

About Me

Hi, my name is Hans-Hinrich Thedens and I run the Norwegian Collection of Folk Music at the University of Oslo. I do research in tradtional music, both of the past and of the present. I am German and was so lucky to find work in Norway, as it has one of the most vivid traditional music scenes in Europe. You can work with musicians here, not only with old recordings! And I enjoy learning from them and playing with them!

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Traditional musicians and other people dealing with or just "into" tradtional music in Norway and the US (mainly in TN, KY, NC, VA as that's where I have been.). I am interested what people think about music and what they do with it. This is a research project I started some years ago when I spent 5 months at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, ETSU has what very likely is the largest program in Bluegrass, Old-time and Country music on this planet, and I interviewed students there as well as many others I met on many enjoyable trips from music event to music event.
Back home in Norway I try to follow what is happening here and I have visited the Ole Bull Academy in Voss which has a two-part program in traditional music. Visits at Telemark University college and the State Academy of Music are planned....
The listed friends are mostly people I have met and talked too. Well, ok, I had to put in a couple of heroes too.
