Josef "Wawau" Adler was born on January, 25th, 1966 in Karlsruhe in the southwest of Germany. He started to learn the guitar at the age of nine. Wawau comes from a musical gypsy family. His uncle and his grandfather played the harp for operas. Wawau is mainly self taught; he studied Django Reinhardt records over and over and at the age of thirteen he was ready to give his first concerts. The tradition of Django Reinhardt and the swing manouche are very important to Wawau Adler. Equally important is the influence of modern jazz; he loves Charlie Parker, Wes Montgomery and Pat Martino. Wawau is equally at home on an acoustic Selmer type guitar as well as on an electric archtop. He easily switches from Jazz Manouche to Bebop. Although Wawau is a fascinating virtuoso it is not just chops and speed what counts for him, especially in the Jazz Manouche style. For Wawau the music of his people has energy and fire, but it is also very important for his approach to the guitar to express melancholy, nostalgia and elegance. Wawau considers tone, phrasing and dynamics to be crucial for a good guitarist. He thinks of music in terms of dialogue and communication. After playing various guitars Wawau finally found the ideal instruments for him when he met Dutch luthier Leo Eimers. To him these guitars have the most authentic sound and a very strong projection. As a leader Wawau Adler works with different formations. He frequently plays with the accordion master Marcel Loeffler; they are perfect musical partners as you can hear on Wawau's newest CDs "Wawau Adler - Back To The Roots" and "Wawau Adler - Back To The Roots Vol. 2 ".
