EJ von LYRIK
BRIEF BACKGROUND
EJ von LYRIK hails from a township called Mitchell’s Plain on the Cape Flats, Cape Town, South Africa.
She has been writing and performing her own material eversince she started working on music as a career in 1997. Having a distinct interest in music production, she started producing her own instrumentals in 2001. She has performed on various international stages as well as collaborating with some hefty names in the music industry, and forms a third of the legendary female hip hop group Godessa.
EJ is a vibrant performer and loves the stage as much as the studio. She also has passionate views on human rights and believes music is a spiritual gift, and this is very evident when listening to her lyrics and musical productions.
PROJECTS
1997 - recorded and independantly released a song called "Energy" with her very first group Neophytes.The song received airplay on various radio stations in Cape Town.
•1998 - did vocal work with 4 times SA DMC champ, Ready D on mixtapes that also received airplay on radio stations such as GHFM, YFM and MetroFM.
•1999 - worked on various studio projects with now defunct DarkerShadzOfPhunk hip hop collective.
•2000 - recorded a song for the soundtrack of a documentary called "Tomorrow’s Heroes."
- while in Tanzania, she also recorded 2 songs as part of a South African, Netherlands and Tanzanian exchange project. The cd is called "Overflow."
- wrote and recorded 2 songs for the YAA 2000 (Youth Against Aids) project that was initiated by VOA (Voice of
America) and Bush Radio. The songs are available at Bush Radio on the YAA2000 compilation.
- started Godessa with Shameema Williams and Bernadette Amansure and later wrote and recorded a track for Bush
Radio’s HIVHOP Project. EJ created the music for the song. The song is entitled "Misconceptions".
•2001 - worked with theatre group from the Netherlands called MadeInDaShade on a production called DiggyDotCom 3.
•2002 - recorded album "Spillage", with group Godessa. Produced three songs for this project called Mic Lesson, DissFunkshin and Newsflash.
- worked with Godessa on debut single "Social Ills"and released it in August 2002.
- Produced music for a themesong for a documentary called "Doing It!". The song is performed by Godessa and is
called "Overcome".
•2003 - Produced a remix for a song on the MoodPhase5 DeluxeMode Remix Album. The song is called "...
•2004 - Produced first solo album for Burni Aman (Bernadette Amansure) from Godessa. The album is entitled "Modus
Operandie".
- Produced a song called "Life" on TEBA’s "20-5-2-1 Manifesto" album and does vocal work on this album as well.
This cd is available on High Voltage Entertainment and distributed by Kurse Music Distribution.
•2005 - Produced 2 songs on the Jitsvinger debut solo album. The album is entitled "Skeletsleutel" and the songs are called
"Doenit!" and "SoesEkAlleenWietHoe". This cd is also available on High Voltage Entertainment and distributed by
Kurse Music Distribution.
- Voice over artist for a pilot television series called URBO - The Adventures of Pax Afrika".... done by Octagon. Created melody for one of the musical pieces in this childrens’ series.- Remixed a song by ZUBZ called "You pick me up".
•2006 - Plays lead female role in a feature film entitled "The Fringe" (working title). Produced music for soundtrack as well.
- Recording and releasing her first solo album entitled "Method In the Madness". EJ also co-produced this project with
long term producer Grenville Williams.
- EJ has been a participant of the UNICEF African Youth Dialogue Programme entitled, "The Genesis", that took place in Ethiopia in March 2006. This will be an ongoing programme where artists from all over Africa will be speaking to youths from various remote areas in different African countries, gathering information about pertinent issues and then relaying these issues to the media and decision makers in the countries, as to shed light on these issues and to bring about change in the lives of the youths affected by these issues.
•2007- Played lead female role in Hip Hop Connected Theatre production held at Artscape Theatre in July.
PERFORMANCES
•1999- Aula Theatre in Oslo, Norway with Prophets of da City.
•2000- Club performances around Cape Town.
•2001- Club performance in Tanzania.
- Festival Mundial, Netherlands.
•2002- 2005 - include international performances at various fests with her group Godessa. (check out www.godessa.com)
•2006- Heritage Day event in Cape Town. Released colab album Rogue State of Mind and toured with Godessa in June/July 2006 in Switzerland.•2007- Performed with TEBA at OBZ Fest in Cape Town. Various community/charity events around Cape Town aswell as clubscene.
•2008- Live tv performance with group Godessa on SABC 2 for Human Rights Day.
