The Melon Farmers were based in Houston, Texas in the mid 1990's. The band played all originals with the exception of a few covers. Most of the songs clock in at under a couple minutes in length. We felt strongly about making our point and moving on. The Melon Farmers formed in Houston after the members graduated from Texas A&M. We all played in several bands while attending A&M, but this was the first time the three of us collaborated together.
Scott and Richard met in the mid 1980's at A&M and formed a band called The Rain (later renamed to The Monads) with Mark Daniels. That band morphed into Spittle Fist when Scott left to drum with the skate punk band Street Pizza. During this time Stevie was jamming with Craig Knight (Blitz of Street Pizza) and Hadden Sayers in a 3-piece Texas blues band called the Killtones. Late in 1990 Scott and Stevie hooked up with Drew Wilson of Street Pizza to form the short-lived thrash metal band Trouser Trout. In the early 90's, Scott, Stevie and Hadden formed the band Voodoo Deluxe. Hadden soon moved on to tour with the Whips, eventually forming his own group, the Hadden Sayers Band.
After working over a few guitarists, The Melon Farmers formed in Houston in 1993 when Richard came back to Houston after completing law school. The practice space was in the attic of an industrial battery shop located in the barrio east of downtown Houston...with a liquor store located just 20 paces away. The band enjoyed marginal success and was particularly adept at emptying clubs in very short order.
In the fall of 1996, Scott moved to California, and Stevie relocated to Atlanta in 1998. Richard still maintains his roots in Houston. These days Scott and Richard are busy raising their families while Stevie does whatever it is he does in Atlanta.
