My name is Michael Cox, former front man of Speedtrucker. We were labeled Dallas' best live band. This was according to several newspapers, radio stations, etc. Who knows! All I know is we had/have the greatest friends and fans not only in Dallas but from coast to coast. We broke up in 2006 for several reasons. The biggest reason being that I was diagnosed with MS. For those of you who aren't familiar with MS it can be a very debilitating disease.MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Surrounding and protecting the nerve fibers of the CNS is a fatty tissue called myelin, which helps nerve fibers conduct electrical impulses. In MS, myelin is lost in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis. These damaged areas are also known as plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken.Myelin not only protects nerve fibers, but makes their job possible. When myelin or the nerve fiber is destroyed or damaged, the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain is disrupted, and this produces the various symptoms of MS. (For more information go to www.mssociety.comAlot of people have asked how it has effected me. I had my first flare up in March of 2005. I got a bad case of vertigo two times in 13 days. Both times I ended up in the hopsital for a short stint. At the time the doctors had no clue what was causing it. In August of 2005 I went blind in my left eye for about 10-12 weeks. That's when I was diagnosed by a good friend and doctor. For months I was told that I needed to be on Betaseron shots but they were extremely expensive. In December I was hit with another episode of vertigo and ended up in the hospital for an extend visit. After great research and support from friends/family, I started the shots.Since then I have been almost episode free. Which brings me to the purpose of Musicians Fighting MS. I decided to start this grassroots group for three main reasons:1.To unite musicians to help raise money for other artists who suffer from this disease. 2. To help them with paying for medicine, doctors visits, and all other expenses stemming from MS. 3. To support all MS Society sponsored events that help raise money for finding a cure. This is the very beginning of this group and I invite you to become a friend of this myspace site, get involved in events, and to spread the word about what we are doing here. We have several shows and events planned so please check our calendar often.Sincerely,
Michael Cox of
