About Me
You're broken.
History
Gabriel Gray was a second generation watchmaker who always despised his occupation. He had always lived an uneventful life up to and including the point where he began fixing watches himself at the family business, Gray and Sons. When he was approached by Chandra Suresh and told that he might have special powers, Gabriel was quite hopeful that his theories were correct. However, none of Chandra's tests indicated that Gabriel had any sort of abnormal properties whatsoever. Growing doubtful, Chandra decided to move on to the next person on his list, which angered the distraught Gabriel. In an attempt to validate his hopes and prove that he was special, Gabriel used information from Chandra's notes with the name and address of Brian Davis, another possible subject on Chandra's list. He contacted Davis, asking him to visit his store and introduced himself as "Sylar," a pseudonym derived from the brand of watch that he was working on at the time. Gabriel then identified Davis as a telekinetic. Just as he was able to detect inconsistencies and defects in watches and time pieces, Gabriel sensed the genetic difference between Davis and a normal human, stating that he was "broken." Unlike Gabriel, who desperately wanted to be special, Davis feared his power, asking if he could be rid of it. Claiming that he could "fix" Davis, Gabriel brutally murdered him, acknowledging a previous statement by Chandra that "it is in the brain." He returned to Chandra's apartment the next day, this time demonstrating extreme telekinetic abilities beyond those exhibited by Davis. Thoroughly impressed, Chandra continued on with his research with "Sylar."
Sylar, being Chandra's very first recorded study, was dubbed "Patient Zero," though sometime over the course of six months the study ceased, as the two had a falling out. In a taped phone conversation discovered by Mohinder Suresh, Sylar states that Chandra "made [him] this way," and referred to a mysterious "uncontrollable hunger" that he now experiences. Chandra wanted nothing to do with Sylar at this point. A vision Chandra's son, Mohinder, experienced in showed Sylar killing Chandra in the latter's taxicab. Chandra's death was what originally brought Mohinder to New York.
Eventually, Sylar became a notorious serial killer, using Chandra's list to track down victims across the United States. This led FBI agent Audrey Hanson to become obsessed with capturing him. Three months after taking on his serial killer persona, Sylar led Hanson on a chase through the streets of Chicago, following another one of his murders. Hanson chased him into the subways. He gave his cap and trench coat to an innocent elderly man, which caused the agent to mistake the man for Sylar. After shooting the man, she realized her mistake, and the unbearable guilt from her error intensified her drive to hunt him down.
Agent Hanson investigated a double homicide where a married couple with a child were murdered. The woman was pinned horizontally to the staircase and the male, James Walker, was frozen solid in mid-pose with his brain removed. Telepathic police officer Matt Parkman found their unharmed daughter, Molly, hiding in the house, and learned the name "Sylar" from Hanson. The two began working together to catch their suspect.
Sylar infiltrated the FBI's Los Angeles office and attempted to kidnap the murdered couple's daughter, Molly. Parkman and Hansen stopped him and gave chase. When Audrey pulled her gun, Sylar used his powers to force her back against a wall and make her point her weapon to her own head. Matt arrived and shot at Sylar, but when Matt checked on Audrey, Sylar stood up and the bullets which supposedly hit him fell to the ground. As the two law-enforcement officers looked back, Sylar disappeared upward.
Meanwhile, Mohinder and Eden McCain broke into Sylar's apartment in New York. The apartment had no photographs but plenty of books on philosophy and a copy of Chandra's book, Activating Evolution. A secret room also contained a map similar to those used by the Sureshes, but with many more connections and papers linked to it. Nathan Petrelli was identified on one of the links, and in an adjoining room, the wall was covered in scrawls, some seemingly written in blood. Most of the messages amounted to variations on the phrase "Forgive me, father, for I have sinned." When Mohinder fetched police officers to show them the apartment, it had already been cleaned out.
Sylar continued to use Chandra's list, leading him to Texas. Sylar entered a diner where Hiro Nakamura and Ando Masahashi were being served by a young waitress named Charlie Andrews. Charlie Andrews possessed a superhuman memorization ability, which Sylar learned from watching her from the shadows. When Charlie went to the diner's storeroom, Sylar murdered her in his standard fashion. Sylar then took her brain, despite there being a blood clot in it.
A stylized image of Sylar was found on a painting in Isaac Mendez's apartment. When Peter Petrelli finished the painting, the man was standing over the mutilated body of a cheerleader. After his stop at the diner, Sylar traveled to Claire's high school to murder the one he believed to be a superhealing cheerleader. In the school's gym, Sylar attacked Claire and her classmate Jackie Wilcox, but concentrated his attack on Jackie, due to a news article which reported that Jackie had saved a man from a fire. Sylar merely hurled Claire, with crushing force, against a nearby wall. As Sylar brutally attacked Jackie, Claire healed from the attack and saw Sylar cut open Jackie's skull with no physical contact. When Sylar realized he had the wrong girl, he turned to pursue Claire. As she made her escape, Sylar used his powers to attack Peter, who had run into Claire in the hallway, by hurtling locker doors at him. His pursuit ended on top of the school, where he and Peter struggled, causing both of them to fall off. Sylar escaped alive, but was later apprehended by Eden McCain and the Haitian. Eden used her persuasive abilities to prevent Sylar from attacking her and the Haitian put him to sleep.
Sylar is confined in a small cell which supposedly prevents him from using his powers. During his imprisonment, Sylar becomes infuriated when Mr. Bennet repeatedly refers to him as Gabriel, insisting that his name is really Sylar after repeated uses of his former name. Bennet informs him that he'll be taken apart and studied, comparing the act to the watches Sylar once repaired. Before this can happen, however, Eden visits Sylar and attempts to use her powers to make him commit suicide with a gun she brought along, as she believes him to be too dangerous to be kept alive for any reason. However, before she can give him the gun, he telekinetically drags her through the glass wall of his cell. While he informs her that her power will help him immensely, she points the gun to her own head and fires, killing herself and preventing Sylar from acquiring her power.
Bennet and the Haitian then rush into the cell and subdue him with a tranquilizer gun. Sylar is later seen lying helpless on the floor of his cell after being injected with strange drugs used to help make special abilities manifest. The doctor in charge of him, Hank, states that Sylar has been tested to the brink of death, saying Sylar had been given enough drugs to kill an elephant, and still fails to display any power besides telekinesis.
The tests on Sylar seem to be fatal, as he dies despite Hank's best efforts. However, after Hank reports this to Bennet and removes his restraints, Sylar revives (possibly having faked his condition) and murders Hank. When Bennet arrives to check on Sylar, he finds Hank's body in Sylar's place and Sylar standing calmly behind him. Sylar simply asks Bennet, "How's Claire?"
Sylar uses his telekinesis to attack Mr. Bennet, and then traps him in the cage in which Bennet had imprisoned him. After stealing Bennet's driver's license to learn the location of Bennet's house, he travels there. Under the disguise of a Primatech employee making a delivery for Mr. Bennet, he fools Mrs. Bennet for a while. However, Sylar's strange interest in Claire eventually causes Mrs. Bennet to see through his deception. He then uses his telekinesis to attack her, after telling her of his murderous intentions in regards to Claire. As he moves in to finish her off, Mr. Bennet and the Haitian run into the house. Bennet shoots Sylar multiple times. Nonetheless, Sylar quickly escapes. Though the Haitian quickly chases after him, Sylar has already vanished.
While on the run once more, the bullet wounds annoy Sylar. He notes that things would be easier if he had Claire Bennet's healing factor. To go "north" and out of "Podunk, Texas," Sylar hitches a ride with a semi-truck driver. After realizing the driver is really heading West, Sylar kills him and hijacks the delivery truck. Police eventually follow Sylar, but he easily escapes them by using his powers to put ice on the road and then jump/fly out of the truck as it crashes over the embankment. Sylar also notes that he is down to the last person he can remember from Chandra's list.
Zane Taylor had been expecting Mohinder Suresh, and Sylar let Zane assume he was Suresh when he came to his home. Zane let him into his house, quickly demonstrating his molecular manipulation powers to him. The floor was also littered with melted appliances that Zane had tested his powers on. Sylar kills Zane and takes his power, just before the real Mohinder arrives. When Mohinder arrived, Sylar identified himself as Zane Taylor, showing Mohinder his new power when prompted. Mohinder then asked for a DNA sample. Sylar covertly gives him a sample from Taylor's corpse, in place of his own. In the end, Sylar, in need of a new way to find victims, has a proposition for Mohinder. Sylar asks to accompany Mohinder on his mission to find the other "unique people," saying he could help convince them since he has a power. Mohinder happily agrees.
Sylar and Mohinder locate a woman named Dale, who possess incredibly enhanced hearing, able to hear rain coming from forty miles away, or hear the changes in someone's heartbeat. Sylar demonstrates Zane's power to her, and she agrees to let Mohinder run some tests. Later that night Sylar returns and kills Dale, taking her power. The next day, Sylar finds her powers hard to control, the slightest noise causing him to reel in pain. Mohinder finds Dale's body, but Sylar convinces him not to phone the police, telling him they'd look too suspicious. Mohinder agrees, and says he'll phone them once they're on the road again.
Mohinder, unbeknownst to Sylar, has discovered his true identity, after finding a news article on the internet about Zane Taylor's death. Mohinder drugs Sylar, and restrains him to a chair, hooking up an I.V. that feeds Sylar a chemical to make him unable to control his powers. Mohinder prepares to shoot Sylar, but stops when Sylar tells him that his father confided in him, and trusted him more then Mohinder, who instead takes a sample of Sylar's spinal fluid. Through the sample, Mohinder apparently finds the key to being able to locate the other unique people ("make a new list", as Mohinder put it). He then goes to kill Sylar, who had secretly shut the I.V. off via telekinesis. Sylar telekinetically stops the bullet Mohinder fires at him, and then asks Mohinder for his list. Later on, Peter arrives at Mohinder's apartment, finding him pinned to the ceiling, bleeding. Sylar then emerges from the darkness and pins Peter to the wall, saying that he'd like to see how Peter's power works. He then grabs Peter and begins to slice his skull in the same manner he has all his victims.
Sylar slices deep into Peter's skull, attempting to claim his powers. However, Peter is able to use Claire's healing ability to close the wound before hurling Sylar across the room with his own telekinetic abilities, freeing Mohinder as a result. Sylar quickly recovers from the attack and prepares to battle Peter, who responds by becoming invisible. Sylar retaliates by lifting a large amount of shattered glass off the ground and flinging it in all directions, stabbing Peter in the back of the head and killing him. As Sylar moves in to take Peter's power, Mohinder crushes him against the wall with his charts, knocking him out. Sylar awakens later, finding Mohinder's list destroyed. He flies into a rage, only to find Isaac's address on the ground.
saac just finishes a painting of Sylar standing over his corpse as the killer arrives. Isaac tells Sylar that he's seen Sylar's future, and that he is doomed to die at the hands of the other heroes. Sylar demands to see those paintings, but Isaac says that he has already sent them for the others to find, and that his purpose is complete; he was destined to show the others how to kill Sylar. Sylar retaliates by impaling Isaac's wrists and ankles with paintbrushes. Isaac tells him that he can't fight the future, and Sylar kills him and takes his power. Sylar is later seen painting a picture of Nathan Petrelli standing in the White House. His painting is, however, far darker and more macabre than Isaac's, showing Nathan in a slightly demonic light; the colors of the painting are also distorted.
Sylar finishes a new painting, showing himself about to kill Ted Sprague. Fearing that the painting indicates that he is the exploding man, he phones Suresh, telling him that he doesn't know why he'd want to do that. He tells him that he only killed people who "didn't deserve" their powers, and that he doesn't want to kill all those innocent people. Mohinder asks him to turn himself in while dialing 911, which Sylar hears and quickly hangs up. Sylar then calls his mother and asks if he could come over. He goes to clean himself up, dressing like he appeared in Six Months Ago, with his glasses and slicked hair. As he goes to leave, he hears the heartbeats of Hiro and Ando, who had come looking for Isaac. Hiro teleports himself and Ando away just before Sylar moves the painting they were using as cover aside, and they then begin to follow him.
Sylar arrives at his mother's apartment, his mother expressing great joy and relief to see him. During their conversations, in which Sylar asks that his mom accept him as a "normal" watchmaker, and not wish for him to be special, it becomes apparent that his mother is the reason Sylar longs to be special. She even tells him that he could be president if he wanted. Sylar eventually demonstrates his powers to his mother, using a kitchen hose, his ice powers and telekinesis to turn her apartment into a "snow globe". However, he seems to become detached and unresponsive as he uses his powers, eventually flinging snow globes around the room and injuring his mother.
She hides from him in her room, Sylar pleading with her to come out and asking why he'd hurt all the people he thinks he'll kill when New York explodes. His mother goes to leave, saying that she wants to speak with her son, not the man before her. Sylar tries to prevent his mother from leaving and a brief struggle ensues, his mother trying to stab him with a pair of scissors. Sylar inadvertently impales his mother, just before Hiro stops time and moves in to kill Sylar. However, Hiro hesitates and breaks his concentration, allowing Sylar to block his swing. Sylar tries to goad Hiro into killing him, calling him weak when he can't do it. He breaks Hiro's sword with his freezing powers, and Hiro teleports away before Sylar can kill him. Sylar is later seen painting the explosion in New York in blood, saying that his mother was right about him being able to become president.
Sylar later tracks down Sprague, who is with Claire, Peter, Mr. Bennet and Matt Parkman. Sylar uses his enhanced hearing to learn that Sprague, Peter, and Claire are heading to Nebraska and he begins following them. Peter hears Sylar's thoughts as they move down the street, and the three of them duck into a building to hide. Sylar takes the time to contact the FBI and inform them of Sprague's whereabouts, leading to his arrest shortly after he leaves the building. Audrey Hanson, who is leading the FBI team, thanks Sylar for the tip. He gives his name as Isaac Mendez before disappearing into the crowd. Later, Sylar attacks the van that is transferring Sprague to Guantanamo Bay, using his telekinesis to flip it over. Still chained to the van, Sprague is unable to fight back as Sylar moves in and kills him, taking his power. He is last seen atop a building, overlooking New York and testing his new ability. He then gives an eerie grin as he looks out on the city, and utters one word: "Boom".
Sylar paints a picture of himself facing off against Peter Petrelli in battle. Realizing Peter is in his final destiny, Sylar prepares to hunt him down. However, before he leaves, Ando arrives to kill him. Sylar easily defeats Ando and discovers the comic that shows his death, then taunting Ando that a "pathetic man" like Hiro could never kill him. Sylar demands the location of Peter from Ando, but Ando tells him he doesn't know. Hiro teleports into the loft, and he and Sylar have a standoff, Sylar taunting Hiro to try and stop time before he cuts Ando's head off. Hiro manages to quickly teleport himself and Ando away, and Sylar leaves.
Doing as his painting suggests, Sylar waits in Kirby Plaza for Peter. Peter soon arrives with Mr. Bennet, whom Sylar hurls against a wall, incapacitating him. Sylar tells Peter that he will not get "all the glory", and grabs him with his telekinesis. Matt Parkman arrives and shoots at Sylar, who stops the bullets and throws them back at Matt, gravely wounding him. Sylar then grabs a parking meter and begins to beat Peter, but a nearby Niki Sanders rips the meter from Sylar's hands and knocks him down. Peter tells Niki to leave and now - having absorbed her superhuman strength - begins beating Sylar viciously. Sylar, instead of fighting back, begins laughing as Peter's hands begin to glow. He tells Peter that he has been wrong all along, that he is the villain, and Sylar is the hero. As Sylar prepares to finish Peter, Hiro teleports in behind him and stabs Sylar through the chest before he can react. Sylar collapses to the ground, but before Hiro can do anything to stop Peter from exploding, Sylar uses what little strength he has left to toss Hiro against a building, forcing him to teleport away at the last second. Sylar smiles and slumps to the ground and in his eyes sees everyone who has died due to his own actions, including himself, and they then fade to white.
As the other characters mourn the apparent loss of the Petrelli brothers, Sylar vanishes, leaving only a bloody trail leading from where he laid to an open manhole cover on which a cockroach crawls.
Later Sylar is found to be in the company of Candice Wilmer, who apparently dragged him into the manhole cover after his defeat in New York. The two are in hiding somewhere in Mexico. Sylar's severe injuries, described as having required eight surgeries to fix (Hiro's stab apparently struck his spine, among other injuries), have somehow rendered his powers inoperative, if not caused them to disappear entirely. Candice assures him that his powers will return, if he has adequate time to rest and heal. She also mentions that the people she works for want Sylar to be healthy and with his power back. Sylar, enraged by his loss of powers, begins rebuilding his power base by killing Candice, only to discover that it does not correct the problem — he is unable to access her power of illusion. Stumbling outside, he finds himself alone in the middle of a dense jungle.
A period of time later, Alejandro and Maya come across his near unconscious form on their way to America. When asked what his name is, he replies with Gabriel Gray, his name before adopting the Sylar moniker. He tells Maya that he knows Dr. Chandra Suresh and that he will take the siblings to him. Maya praises Sylar, while Alejandro remains wary of Sylar's intentions. While making a stop, the car's 'owner', Derek, notices from a newspaper that Maya and Alejandro are wanted fugitives. Sylar agrees to stall the pair while Derek calls the police, but kills Derek before heading back to Maya and Alejandro. Once there, he is nearly killed after stressing Maya with the news that Derek is calling the police, which causes her to manifest her virus. However, Sylar is saved when Alejandro reverses the effects. Sylar then agrees to take the pair to see Chandra Suresh and reveals he has the keys, driving off with the siblings after telling them that he understands people like them, who have done things they aren't really responsible for. Throughout, a jagged, broken version of Sylar's 'clockwork' theme is heard.
Alejandro becomes more distrustful of Sylar, while Sylar is able to earn Maya's trust in turn. Upon reaching the US border, their car is surrounded by armed civilians enforcing the law. Sylar persuades Maya to use her power in order to avoid capture by the armed patrol. Later that night, he engages in a fist fight with Alejandro outside the car, forcing Maya to intervene and break them up. Unable to convince her to leave Sylar behind, he warns her that he will let Sylar die if she uses her power again. After Maya walks away, Sylar reveals his true intentions to Alejandro, knowing he won't be able to understand a single word: once he regains his powers, he'll kill them both and steal their abilities, as well. He also says that even if he doesn't regain his powers, Maya will become his new toy, and he'll use her for his own ends.
Sylar further manipulates Maya, telling her it possible to control her powers. He taunts her into a state of emotional frenzy, telling her that her brother hates her and that in her heart she wanted to see his fiancee dead. She nearly kills Sylar with her ability, but at the last moment reverses it, gaining at least some control of her power. Sylar then convinces her she must send Alejandro away for his own good. In a heated scene with the three of them she tells him to leave and that she is staying with Gabriel. Alejandro comes back later in an attempt to stop Sylar's manipulation of Maya, and is stabbed and killed. Maya arrives and confesses her love for "Gabriel," and kisses him, not realizing Alejandro's fate. At the end of the episode Sylar and Maya arrive at the Parkman residence, waiting beside a sleeping Molly. He calls Suresh, stating ominously that he will "see him soon."
Sylar attempts to obtain a cure for his condition, now revealed to be the same strain of the Shanti Virus which Niki was infected with. After Mohinder learns of this, he attempts to stab Sylar, but Sylar reveals a gun and forces Mohinder to comply. Monhider takes him to his lab and covertly triggers the alarm, then stalls for time. While waiting with Molly, Molly reveals that she can track Alejandro through a photograph, only to have her failed attempt confirm for Maya that Sylar killed Alejandro. When she confronts him about it, Sylar shoots her. He has Mohinder test the cure enhanced with Claire's blood on Maya, and once it begins working attempts to leave with the rest. Elle shows up to take down Sylar, but fails to capture him, though she does cause several significant wounds. Soon after in a deserted alleyway Sylar injects himself with the cure, healing his wounds. He tests out his telekinesis by summoning a can to his hand, happily remarking, "I'm back."
Sylar goes to the Bennets' home in Costa Verde. He surprises Claire, but she knocks him unconscious with one of her cheerleading trophies. She tries to run but Sylar telekinetically locks the entire house. Sylar begins to terrorize her as she runs for cover in a closet and locks herself in. He finds a box of Noah's files and grows excited to have a "shopping list" of abilities, since he lost all his powers. While Sylar is talking aloud with his back to her, Claire stabs him through the chest. She runs to the front door but he pins her to the wall. Sylar opens her skull so he can view her brain. She asks if he is going to eat her brain, but Sylar replies that that's disgusting. Sylar obtains her regenerative power and finds more. He says that Claire is more "special" than she actually realizes and no one, not even Sylar, can kill her.
As Sylar leaves the Bennet residence, Bianca Karina and Gael Cruz attempt to detain him, only to be tossed away and killed.Later on Level 5 of Primatech Research, Sylar throws Elle against the viewing window of Noah's cell after she alerts Noah of Sylar's presence. Sylar allows Noah to shoot him, but heals from the bullet wounds and violently slams Noah against the ceiling and back to the ground. Peter Petrelli, trapped in the body of Jesse Murphy, curses him from his cell while Sylar drags Elle towards him and flips her, so she is face up. Holding up Noah's dropped gun, Sylar turns it to gold, mocking Bob. Discarding the gun, Sylar begins to cut a line across Elle's forehead. Elle screams and releases a burst of energy from her body that knocks him unconscious and frees the rest of the Level 5 prisoners. Later, Sylar wakes up to find himself strapped to a table with a tube in his nose. Angela enters his cell and greets him as Gabriel to which he weakly replies, "My name is Sylar." She strokes his hair and tells him he can receive wisdom, guidance, and love from her as all mothers can provide. Sylar replies that she isn't his mother, but Angela smiles and says, "Oh, but I am, dear."
After the revelation of Angela's maternity to Sylar, Angela calls in Bridget Bailey and explains her power. She states that Bridget is there to feed Sylar. Angela leaves the cell, leaving Bridget and Sylar alone, and Bridget's screams can be heard from the cell along with the sound of grinding bone.Later, Noah arrives at Level 5, called in to help recapture the Level 5 escapees. Angela introduces him to his new partner, who is none other than Sylar.Sylar and Noah pull up to a bank, which is being robbed by four Level 5 escapees. Noah tells Sylar to stay out of his way, but Sylar protests that it is a one-sided partnership. Before Noah can talk to the police, Sylar begins to tell the police to move their perimeter back. He then tells a cop to get him and Noah coffee. Noah is impressed, and tells him that he will use his "silver tongue" to make sure the hostages won't tell the press what they saw, and to stay away from the bank. Later, Noah is in trouble inside the bank, but Sylar steps in and helps Noah by using telekinesis to freeze Knox and choke Jesse. Flint prepares to burn Sylar, but Noah intercepts and shoots him. After Noah leaves the bank with some of the escapees, Sylar locks the building, allows Knox to escape, and cuts open Jesse's head, telling Noah that he is a monster. Both Sylar and Noah lock up the only remaining Level 5 escapee, Flint. Angela then appears with Sylar's prison clothes, and he says "Maybe you were wrong about me." Angela only responds with a smile and says "We'll see" as Sylar retreats back into his cell.
Peter Petrelli teleports into Sylar's cell, and instantly tries to attack him. Peter reveals that he went into the future and learned how to access Sylar's ability of intuitive aptitude. Sylar claims that Peter now has the hunger, but Peter replies that he will never let himself become like Sylar. Sylar expresses a grin and states that Peter is already like him. In anger, he snaps Sylar's neck, but Sylar quickly regenerates. He jumps up and throws Peter into a wall just in time to save Angela's life. Angela assures Sylar that she'll make sure Peter will be okay. Noah approaches Sylar, asking for his help in capturing a new target, Stephen Canfield.Sylar and Noah arrive at the Canfields' home, and Stephen creates a vortex. Sylar, Noah, and Claire grab onto parts of the house to avoid being sucked in. Claire slips, but Sylar saves her, grabbing her hand. When the vortex finally ends, Sylar discovers that Canfield escaped, while Claire is angry at her father for working with Sylar, after what he did to her. Sylar admits that when he touched her hand, he could sense how much pain and suffering he caused her, and tries to apologize. Noah tells Sylar never to speak to his daughter. Later, at the Griffith Park Carousel, Claire and Noah approach Canfield, while Sylar waits by the car. Sylar watches as Canfield refuses Noah's request to use his ability to kill Sylar. Later, in the car, Sylar calls Noah a user who doesn't see the humanity of evolved humans.
aphne enters Gabriel's cell and attempts to recruit him for the Pinehearst Company, claiming that Primatech wants to change him into something he's not, whereas Pinehearst likes him for what he is - a killer. He uses his telekinesis powers to hold her against his cell door, but she escapes with Flint after leaving a company card with Gabriel. Gabriel releases Peter from his restraints and cell, then tells him that they have to find whoever paralyzed their mother. Gabriel tells Peter to read Angela's mind. The only thing Peter can extract from her mind is the symbol for Pinehearst Research. As the two brothers prepare to leave, Gabriel tells Peter he won't let him leave in his weakened state. The two fight, ending with Peter telling Sylar that he is weak and Peter now knows what it's like to have all this power. Peter leaves Gabriel comatose in a Level 5 cell.
Subconsciously, Sylar is visited by his mother Angela in his induced comatose state on Level 5. In this dream, he is told that his powers are not completely subdued by the drug shunt keeping him under. Angela then tells Sylar that he needs to free his brother Peter from the grasps of the Pinehearst Research company. Sylar quickly obeys his mother's orders and breaks out of the cell, stopping by Angela's own comatose body to let her know that he will save Peter.Once at Pinehearst, Sylar quickly knocks back Mohinder and a Pinehearst tech right before they can inject Peter. Sylar frees Peter, claiming that "It's what brothers do". Shortly thereafter, Sylar is knocked unconscious by Mohinder, who is stopped by Arthur who explains that Sylar is also one of his sons. Held in Arthur's office by his father, Sylar is told by his father that Angela feared him after his birth and tried to drown him. He claimed that she did not love him, and that he should stick with him instead. After Peter tries to save Sylar, Sylar throws his brother out of a seventh story window of the building. However, Sylar also uses his telekinesis to slow Peter's fall, to prevent his death. Arthur discretely shows Sylar he knows he saved him, but Sylar does not admit that it was his doing.
While at the Pinehearst building, Arthur tells Sylar that he knows that he saved Peter because he has empathy. Arthur then sends him into a dark room where Elle is chained up. Elle starts electrocuting him mercilessly, with increasingly devastating voltages. After several successively stronger shocks, Sylar's clothing is burnt to a crisp. Elle soon exhausts her powers and begs Sylar to kill her. Sylar raises his hand, but only to release her from her shackles. After forgiving Elle and helping her forgive herself, he begins exhibiting lightning as well. She helps him master his newfound power, touching him rather closely on the arm and chest. Later, he and Elle are released and they go to Arthur's office to watch Arthur sketch the eclipse.
Sylar is in a room at Pinehearst, practicing Elle's power. Elle walks in and Sylar mentions that he has to prove himself. Elle asks to whom, but he doesn't answer. Arthur comes to tell Sylar to find Claire. Elle joins him. They fly to LAX and enter Hotspur Car Rental, where Elle confronts Sylar about being his own person. He scuffles with the clerk, then Elle and Sylar drive to the Canfields' home. They attack Claire and Noah. Noah dislocates Sylar's shoulder before he and Elle pass out and the Bennets get away. When they wake up, Elle relocates his arm with much pain. Both Sylar and Elle have lost their abilities. Sylar is happy he doesn't feel the hunger. While the two kiss, Noah aims a sniper rifle at them.
Sylar and Elle discuss their unlikely relationship after making love at the Canfields' home, but they are interrupted by a hail of bullets from an enraged Noah, who shoots Elle in the leg. Sylar drags her away, and they hide in a scrapyard as Noah continues to look for them. Sylar dresses Elle's wounds in the medical section of a drug store, then carries her into the storeroom as Noah closes in on them following Elle's blood trail. Sylar locks Elle in the elevator and sends her to a lower floor, as Noah arrives and attacks him. After a brief fight, Noah cuts Sylar's throat with a box-cutter, leaving him to bleed to death as Elle watches. When Noah returns home, he discovers that Claire had died from her injuries earlier, but had regenerated when her power returned at the end of the eclipse, and realizes that Sylar could have also revived. Sylar and Elle enter the Bennet house, and Sylar pins Noah to the wall with telekinesis. Noah tells him that Arthur and Angela Petrelli are not his parents, and that they are both manipulating him. Sylar begins to cut Noah's throat using telekinesis, but is interrupted by the appearance of Hiro Nakamura who calls him a "Bad Man", and teleports him and Elle to a beach. On the beach, Sylar questions Elle about her knowledge of his parentage, then declaring that people never change and that he'll always be a killer, begins to slice Elle's head open.
Sylar douses Elle's body with lighter fluid and ignites it with a spark. Frazzled by her death, Sylar takes Elle's phone and searches through her list of contacts. Sylar finds Sue Landers and goes to her place of business. There, he steals her ability of lie detection and confronts three of her co-workers. Sylar successfully tests his new ability on another office worker as they share an elevator.Later, Peter and the Haitian attack Arthur at Pinehearst. Peter shoots Arthur but Sylar arrives and intervenes, stopping the bullet in mid-flight. Peter points the gun at Sylar, but he telekinetically knocks it from Peter's hand. Then Sylar asks Arthur if they really are family. Arthur replies, "Of course...I'm your father." Sylar senses Arthur is lying and projects the bullet into his brain. As Peter looks at the gun, Sylar says that he isn't going to harm Peter, as he doesn't have anything he wants anymore. Sylar exit and Peter tells the Haitian to go after him.
Sylar kills all the guards at the Primatech facility, and traps Noah, Meredith, Claire, and Angela inside the building with the security lockdown. Through the PA system in the security room, he tells them that Arthur Petrelli is dead, and that he will show them, one-by-one, that they are all monsters like him.As Meredith and Noah hunt for Sylar, Noah decides to let out all of the current Level 5 prisoners, Echo DeMille, Eric Doyle, and Danny Pine. Sylar slits Echo's throat and rips off Danny's semi-metallic arm, and then confronts Meredith. Doyle attempts to use his ability to hold Sylar, but Sylar overpowers him. Soon after, he injects Meredith with adrenaline, puts her in a Level 5 cell, and lures Noah inside before locking it shut and ripping off the keypad. He confronts Angela and learns that she is not his mother but that she knows who his real parents are. After learning that she just wanted to use him and didn't really care about him, he begins to choke her, demanding that she give him evidence that she is not a monster like he is, despite having originally stated that he intended to prove she was. Before she can answer him, Sylar is stabbed in the back of the head by Claire with a shard of glass.
Sylar enters the watch repairing shop of his adoptive mother's ex-husband and is examining a watch when he hears a shotgun cock behind him. He turns to find Martin Gray holding a gun on him and demanding why he is in his shop. Sylar recounts a time long ago when Martin left his wife and adoptive son in their appartment and went out for a smoke. Martin never came back. Martin lowers his gun and sets it aside, he walks past Sylar to sit down at his desk. Martin asks who he is, Sylar replies he is Martin's adoptive son and he wants to know who his father is. Martin says it is his brother. Sylar considers killing Martin but does not and simply leaves. Sylar goes to Martin's brother's house and finds nobody is home. Suddenly, he is tasered from behind. However (due to his regenerative ability), it does not affect him and he turns to find a host of soldiers trying to capture him. Sylar is hit by several more tasers and several cables are thrown over his neck and his raised arms. Despite all of this, he retains his footing, telekinetically removes the barbs, and then throws half of the soldiers away and strikes the others down. One man groans in pain and Sylar pulls him to his feet. Sylar questions the agent but he tells Sylar nothing, so Sylar begins to cut open his head.
Sylar attempts to get information about his father out of Daniel Simmons by torturing Mary Campbell and her son Luke. Luke saves his mother, showing Sylar his ability. Impressed, Sylar pulls him aside and has him demonstrate it further. While Sylar is mocking Mary about Luke, Agent Simmons frees himself and pulls a gun. Luke instinctively pushes Sylar aside and uses his ability on Simmons, causing his blood to boil and leak out like water. With the only source he had gone, Sylar departs but Luke chases him and begs for him to take him along. Sylar declines until Luke says he knows where his father is. Sylar can tell he isn't lying and agrees. They steal Mary's car and drive off.
Sylar and Luke head west in search of Samson Gray. Luke refuses to reveal their specific destination, to the irritation of Sylar, who can tell when Luke is lying. Sylar reveals that he cuts open people's heads and rips their ability from their brains, leading Luke to call him a serial killer. As they drive off, a security camera takes a still photo of Sylar, alerting Homeland Security. When they stop at a diner, Luke suddenly asks Sylar if he likes birds, because Samson Gray loved birding. Sylar's own childhood memories of being taken out birding with his father at a young age then begin to resurface. In the diner, Sylar scolds Luke for using his powers frivolously, and says that it's important to have an objective, keep a clear head, and always know what you want. Sylar explains that he used to be motivated by acquiring abilities, but now all he wants is to find his father. Luke then gives Sylar his father's address. As two security agents walk into the diner, Sylar and Luke try to escape, but a plainclothes agent points a gun at Sylar's head. Luke causes a distraction, allowing Sylar to disarm the agents, break a window and drag Luke outside. Sylar locks the car door and drives off, leaving a distraught Luke behind to be captured.Danko's team is preparing to move out when their vehicle is attacked from inside. Sylar emerges from the back of the van dressed as an agent, having killed the whole team. He recovers a laptop and rescues the drugged Luke. Luke thanks Sylar for rescuing him but Sylar claims he came back for the laptop, not Luke.
Sylar and Luke continue their road trip, using the stolen laptop to check that there are no agents in pursuit. Luke asks Sylar why he is so keen to find his father, saying that parents suck. Sylar suddenly stops the car at an abandoned diner, and strips the boards off the door. Realizing that he has been there before, Sylar recalls coming to the diner with his father in 1980, and losing a toy car inside a wooden diner partition. When he rips off the wooden boards in the present day, he finds the car is still there, proving the memory is real.Sylar now remembers that his father did something terrible in that place, something that he had forgotten. Luke suggests it's good not to remember the bad things in your childhood, but Sylar disagrees, saying it eats away at your soul. He then has another flashback, this time of his father taking him over to a table where a man and a woman are sitting. They give Samson a wad of banknotes and Samson leaves. The young Sylar runs out into the parking lot, where he sees his father arguing with his mother in a car. Samson slices her head open and pushes her body out of the car while the boy watches in horror. As Sylar broods, Luke starts to get restless, saying he didn't know about the murder and had been trying to warn Sylar that his dad was a jerk, but Sylar gets angry, claiming that Luke's stories about Samson had been deliberately misleading. He throws Luke against a wall, saying that Luke has been using him to escape his old life, but it's impossible to outrun pain. He then drops Luke on the floor without killing him, and tells him to go home to his mother. When Luke asks where he is going, Sylar says he's going to find his father alone, and that he wants him to die.
Sylar arrives at a trailer in the woods, where he finds his father Samson. Sylar announces he's going to kill him, but Samson turns around, attached to a respirator, and tells him to go ahead as he's dying of cancer anyway.Sylar discovers that his father has an ability when he uses sedation to prevent a rabbit from escaping. His father states that he once had many abilities, although he has forgotten most of them now, and knows that Sylar possesses the same skill. Sylar asks why Samson killed his mother and abandoned him, but Samson says he doesn't remember, because it didn't matter to him. Samson explains how terrible it is to have led an unfulfilled life, and says that Sylar has always chosen easy targets that are not a challenge to him.Sylar helps his father stuff the rabbit, until he cuts his hand with a knife and Samson watches in amazement as the cut heals. Sylar explains that he took this ability from a cheerleader. Distracting Sylar's attention for a moment, Samson uses telekinesis to pin him to the wall with arrows, then sedates him. Sylar wakes up to find his father trying to cut open his head; his hunger has been reawakened and with his health restored, he says he would use his abilities to take real power. Sylar successfully uses telekinesis to disarm and restrain his father, and comments that as a hunter, he should have known he was "playing possum". He nearly strangles him with his oxygen tubes, but eventually leaves Samson to die in pain from his disease, taking the stuffed rabbit and saying he now knows what he has to do.Sylar awaits Danko within his apartment, leaving the stuffed rabbit in clear view for Danko to find.
Danko, in his car, leans to smoke a cigarette, and instead turns around to find Sylar in the backseat. After discussing the recent gifts that Sylar gave him, Sylar offers to help Danko capture people with abilities. Reaching for his gun, Danko turns to find Sylar has vanished. (He is, in fact, enjoying the rain on a nearby rooftop.)After the murders of three of his agents in the hunt for a fugitive with unknown abilities, Danko is greeted in his office by the lone surviving agent of the mission. In the office are a box and a cellphone; calling it is Sylar, who explains that he has found the body of Agent Jenkins. In the box is Jenkins's head; Sylar had it delivered after finding the stashed body of the real Agent. The impostor is really Martin; he is a shape shifter and had taken Jenkins's form. After a failed pursuit of the fugitive, Danko finds Sylar at the shape shifter's home. The two discuss a possible partnership, eventually agreeing to work together on capturing the fugitives: Danko will help find them, and allow Sylar to steal their abilities.Deducing Martin at a nightclub, the two arrive to find the shape shifter, in Danko's form, picking up women; to which Sylar remarks that he is a better Danko than he himself. Martin notices the two and runs. The two split up and look for Martin, who is nowhere to be found. Having lost him, Sylar and Danko agree to exit. As they are doing so, Sylar pulls out a gun to shoot Danko, but Danko beats him to the trigger and shoots Sylar in the stomach. The shape shifter has taken the form of Sylar. Still alive, Sylar can still steal Martin's ability; though Danko asks him not to cut open his head. The next morning outside the nightclub, Danko smugly presents to Noah "Sylar's" dead body; a glass shard is now embedded in its brain. A medic asks Noah if something is wrong as he observes his supposedly vanquished foe. Returning to Danko's car, the medic tosses Danko's cigarette out the window, stating that his habit will kill him. She then shape shifts into Sylar. He and Danko agree that their collaboration will be more "convenient" if everyone believes that Sylar is dead. Danko reminds Sylar that if the two succeed with their plans (to exterminate all evolved humans), Sylar would would be the only posthuman remaining. To which he coldly replies, "Funny how that works."
Sylar, in the shape shifting disguise of Danko, talks to Noah Bennet about the body of "Sylar", which is in fact James Martin. He jokes that Noah was never able to catch Sylar and suggests that he never really wanted to. Noah is then told that Sandra has arrived, and Sylar says to send her up. After hearing Noah tell Sandra that something doesn't feel right about the body, Sylar greets Sandra and shakes her hand, telling her he's seen her before. He then walks into a bathroom, locks the door, and greets the actual Danko, who is perturbed by Sylar masquerading as him, although Sylar seems to enjoy being able to command respect. Sylar shifts back into his original form, and states that he plans on destroying Noah's life.Next, Sylar takes the form of Sandra Bennet, and goes to Noah's apartment to serve him with divorce papers. While doing so, "Sandra" breaks Noah's heart by telling him that she no longer loves or respects him. Sylar then leaves and resumes his own form in an alleyway outside.Noah later realizes that the signature on the divorce papers does not match Sandra's, and receives DNA results that identify the body of "Sylar" as James Martin. Noah figures out Sylar must be working with Danko, and forces Danko to tell him about his current disguise. Noah then brings Danko with him as he meets Sylar who has taken the form of Agent Donner, the leader of Team 6. Noah shoots him in the back, but when the wounded body does not heal, Noah makes the team drop their weapons and runs off.Danko stays with the body, which heals and shape-shifts back into Sylar's own form. Sylar spits out the bullet and is angry that Danko could have gotten him killed. Danko tells Sylar he had no idea he could bleed so much, and Sylar says the bleeding was all for show.
Eighteen hours before the press conference as Nathan, a man wakes up in a bed, looking confused and mutters "not again." He heads towards a mirror and examines himself before changing back into Sylar. Sylar is stunned as he reaches into his mouth and extracts an extra tooth.Outside of Building 26, Sylar is sitting on a park bench as Danko walks up and informs him that he was caught on a security traffic camera. Sylar confesses that he's having problems with his new power, his eyes having stayed blue for over an hour and not his natural brown. Danko gives him an ultimatum, saying that he can either work for Danko and live freely as Agent Taub or be hunted as Sylar. Danko starts to leave, but Sylar changes into his fake identity. Danko is pleased and heads back to work. Sylar uses his telekinesis to carve the words "I AM SYLAR" into his arm. He watches as it heals.Sylar breaks into Tom's house and heads down a hallway. Tom Miller is in his house when he receives a text message from Rebel warning him to run. Sylar takes a sip from Tom's drink, alerting the man to his presence. Tom mistakenly believes Sylar is Rebel. Sylar reveals there are agents coming to capture him and has Tom show him his ability. Sylar thinks the power is fun, but Tom argues. Sylar gives Tom a choice: him or Danko. When Tom chooses him, he proceeds to kill Tom. Danko and his agents then rush the house, with Agent Taub. They discover Tom's body and the words "I AM SYLAR" written in blood on the wall. Taub makes a comment about the ego of the killer.Sylar waits in Danko's office, visibly uncomfortable. Danko joins him, confused. Sylar explains that he is feeling lost and confused. Danko admits that he suffers the same problems and advises Sylar to find an anchor to remind him of who he is. He shows Sylar a watch that his father gave him as an example. Sylar takes the watch and examines it. He informs Danko that it's running fast, prompting Danko to ask where he got that power. Sylar sadly tells him it's the only one that's truly his.At Agent Taub's apartment, a police officer delivers a box containing evidence from the Virginia Gray unsolved murder. Disguised as Agent Taub, Sylar accepts it and closes the door as the officer tries to ask him about it. He takes from the package his mother's sweater. He then sees the France snow globe and remembers stabbing his mother. Angry, he throws it against the wall, but Virginia suddenly appears and comments it was her favorite. Sylar tells his mother about his feelings and emotions, but is interrupted by a knock on the door. A surprised Virginia changes back into Sylar, who is confused about what just happened. He answers the door and Danko informs him that they've cornered Rebel. He wants "Agent Taub" to join them.Danko's team, including Taub, arrive at a building where Rebel is hiding in. Danko leads his team forward, but Taub hangs back. He changes back into Sylar and disappears before Agent Harper can see him. Sylar goes inside and is shocked that Rebel is Micah, a child. Micah tells Sylar that he knows who he is; Sylar uses clairsentience on Micah's phone to learn about who Micah is. Micah informs him that he can help him, that Sylar can be a hero. A few moments later, Micah is running as Danko's team pursues him. He gets shot off a pier as the real Micah watches from his hiding spot. After the rest of the team leaves, Danko stares into the water where "Rebel" fell. Sylar comes up beside him and Danko asks why he didn't take Rebel's ability. Sylar tells him talking to machines would be overkill. Danko doubts Micah is dead, but Sylar points out that Micah was mortal.Back in Agent Taub's apartment, Micah wakes up to find Sylar arguing with himself as his mother. Sylar regrets bringing Micah there and tells him to leave. Micah tries to offer help, but Sylar threatens to kill him the next time he sees him. After this, Sylar goes to Nathan Petrelli's office, where he again holds a conversation with his mother. Sylar gets annoyed that Nathan's had everything handed to him, but when Virginia tries to boost his morale, Sylar admits that she made him feel small and he wanted her dead. Virginia states that it was then he lost himself. Virginia tells him he can be president as he searches through Nathan's stuff. She gives him a toothbrush, from which he extracts DNA and changes into Nathan. He holds his press conference, which Nathan, Angela, Peter, Claire, and Noah watch in Coyote Sands Cafe. Noah reveals Sylar's new power, and Nathan flies off to stop him from becoming the president.Nathan arrives and searches through his office. Sylar surprises him and reveals that he's been using clairsentience to read all about Nathan. He tells Nathan he will be president and proceeds to slice off his head. Nathan suddenly collapses and Sylar finds Danko standing in the doorway. Danko tases Nathan again and tells Sylar to change into Taub. Sylar freshens up, but doesn't change into Taub. As Sylar reveals to Danko that he's not going to follow orders, Danko stabs him in the back of the head with his knife. Danko calls a clean-up crew, but Sylar stands up, prompting Danko to cancel the order. Sylar then pulls the knife out of his head, commenting that it hurt.
After Danko discovers that his attempt to kill Sylar failed, Sylar explains why: using his shape shifting, Sylar moved the weak spot. Sylar pins Danko to the wall and shifts to his appearance, and proceeds to kill some agents. Quickly changing back to Agent Taub, Sylar frames Danko for the murder, forcing Danko's own men to imprison him.Claire shows up in Nathan's office, and finds shifted Sylar who looks like Nathan. Claire is wary if he's really Nathan, and Sylar convinces her by touching her necklace and mentioning their trip to Mexico. Sylar then brings Claire to the place where the president is making a speech, and reveals his true identity once they are in their suite. While waiting to meet the President, Sylar uses telekinesis to force Claire to pour two glasses of wine. He says that as both of them will live forever and have a lot in common, perhaps she will eventually come to love him, but Claire swears she will try to kill him every day of her life. Sylar is attacked by Nathan and Peter, and Peter manages to absorb at least one of his abilities. Sylar throws Nathan into another room, then slits his throat, killing him. Peter and Claire, however, do not see this. He shifts into Nathan, then later Liam Samuels, and enters the President's limo. He reaches out to shake the President's hand, but is confused as he shifts through various forms and finally into his original body. The President is actually Peter, who injects Sylar with a powerful tranquilizer.Sylar's existing memories were blocked by Matt Parkman, who then used his ability to make Sylar believe he's Nathan Petrelli, with the memories Sylar had acquired about Nathan filling in the gaps. Sylar then takes Nathan's form. Later, while watching "Sylar" burn on a pyre, he tells Noah that the President has agreed to provide funding, resources, and deniability for a new version of the Company, and implies Noah will head it. Six weeks later, Angela walks into the room and discusses some things with Nathan. Blankly, he stands up and starts to walk out with Angela but stops and notices a clock is running a minute and a half too fast. He turns the dial back and, now satisfied, grabs his coat and walks out. As Nathan inquires where his mother would like to eat lunch, she doesn't respond, simply staring at the clock.
