The Extraordinary Contraptions

About Me

A lawman, a time traveler, a gentleman explorer and a mad genius join forces... To alter the sound of steampunk as we know it! The Extraordinary Contraptions, Atlanta, Georgia's own steampunk rock band combines superb musicianship with visuals from a time that never was. The rock-and-roll aesthetic meets the steampunk DIY ethic to produce a unique sound and visual sensation. For too long have sequencers and synthesizers sapped the "punk" out of steampunk, but no more! A little band from Terminus is coming to the rescue on a stage near you!

Band Members:
Aelus Kristof von Stadberg

Guitar/Vocals
Aelus, elder half-brother of Dimitri von Stadberg, suffered a mental lapse when renegades and anarchist airship pirates destroyed his home town of Tlemkierc, murdering his ailing father and loving stepmother in the attack and separating him from his half-brother. A sometime-psychic visionary, Aelus experiences uncontrollable emotions underscored by careening bouts of manic laughter, depression and rage. His delusional, debilitating mania is matched only by his amazing intellect and mental prowess. His riffs provide the group with a measure of instability and unpredictability.

Professor Dimitri von Stadberg

Bass/Vocals
A wealthy Massachusetts couple adopted Dimitri after the disaster at Tlemkierc separated him from his brother. They gave him a full classical education, nurturing his quick mind, and encouraged his adventurous nature. After completing studies in Cambridge, Mass, Professor von Stadberg explored the South American wilderness, observing its native cultures. En route to Cambridge from an expedition, Dimitri was unexpectedly and accidentally reunited with his lost half brother, Aelus. Together, they made a vow to avenge the death of their parents, using Dimitri's steady bassline to keep Aelus on track.

Corbin Abel Welch

Percussion
A former lieutenant in the Colonial Peace Enforcement battalions, Corbin went renegade after killing his senior officer, a wicked man who abused the innocent common folk of the outer territories. Outcast, he became a mercenary, walking the line between righteousness and amorality in an effort to survive. In the wreckage of his life, he has found a purpose in punishing wickedness and standing up for those who can not stand up for themselves. When he met the von Stadberg brothers, their goals coincided and he added his clear, staccato beat to their melody.

Sephora Bostwick

Keys/Vocals
Sephora, a scientist from an advanced society, accidentally stepped across time and space when she activated her unique transportation device during a preliminary test, entering the age of steam as she materialized next to Corbin one day during his morning toilette. Her machine unfinished, she needed Corbin's protection in his strange world and he needed her machine to escape his corrupt society. Before long, they heard rumors of inventor brothers united by vengeance; Sephora hoped that Aelus' leaps of intuition and Dimitri's academic insight could help her decipher the mystery of her amazing device.

When the two groups met, Sephora's keys completed the band, locking them together and allowing them to move and play as one. Only by using all of their skills and talents can they ever hope to achieve their goals, using the harmonic concordance of their music to harness the power of the Extraordinary Contraption.
Influences: Sting/Police, Beethoven, hope forming, Zappa, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Philip Pullman (His Dark Materials), Tori Amos, Philip Glass, The Cars, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Fleetwood Mac, Barenaked Ladies, time ripping apart to reveal its mysteries, Rush, Depeche Mode, Stone Temple Pilots, CSNY, hearts breaking, Steely Dan, Motown, Electric Light Orchestra, Phil and Kaja Foglio (Girl Genius), Jefferson Airplane, Mozart, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Ben Folds, Joss Whedon (Firefly/Serenity), ends and beginnings.
Sounds Like: Brass-plated, brown leather-bound rock and roll wrapped around a large gold brick, tossed into the boiler of a southbound locomotive. Cook at 700°F for two hours. Serve with fried okra and grits. Chase with a mint julep.
