Hi everyone! Find out what I'm up to at www.chuckmcclelland.com
Acclaimed as a considerable and highly individual talent, saxophonist Chuck McClelland is one of the most prolific jazz musicians on the Winnipeg scene today. Known for playing adventurous, original music, he has performed with such prestigious groups as the Ron Paley Big Band and the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, as well as with Michelle Grégoire, Brent Parkin, Glenn Buhr, Moses Mayes, Ego Spank, Richard Moody, Süss, and Steve Kirby's Jazz on Wheels. Chuck was also a part of the Rainbow Stage productions of "Grease" and "Smokey Joe's Cafe". With these groups and others, he has recorded and toured across Canada as well as internationally. Chuck was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and raised in the Pembina valley. His love of jazz dates back to his teens, when the music of Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter and many others was introduced to him by his classmates [along with that of Tower of Power, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, of course]. He began to study the saxophone and at the age of 26 moved to Toronto to play gigs and to study with Pat LaBarbera, Mike Murley and Don Thompson. Since then, Chuck's distinctive saxophone sound and innovative compositions have been heard from basement clubs in Toronto to jazz festivals in Canada to concert halls in Europe. In addition to Chuck's extensive work as a leader, he has been sought after as a sideman, appearing with Rodrigo Muñoz, Neil Watson/Adam Mlodzinski and Gilles Fournier. Chuck has also appeared on stage with Knut Haugsoen (Vikrama), John Ervin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Major Squeeze, Dave Lawton, Kevin Curtis, Saxology, Rick Boughton, Larry Roy, the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (SSO), Ken Gold and Mike Swickis to name a few.
