New pic....Philpot by Brazilian photographer Carlos Beier in Miami at Splashlight Studios. More at http://www.splashlightphotobooth.com/. I work with the band Philpot from Dugger, Indiana in the US of A. Prior to that I wrote articles for New York, Vanity Fair, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Observer, Gentleman's Quarterly (GQ), Rolling Stone, Mother Jones, Time Inc., the usual suspects. I also created television for Fox TV and was a political speechwriter (eeek!). My joy right now is working with the guys in Philpot, and with their producer and my partner Bill Klatt (Sneaker Pimps, Queens of the Stone Age, Days of the New). What Klatt told me from day one is "it is all and completely about the song"....without that there is nothing else!!! The new album, Hate Writes Better Than Love, was released this year on Toucan Cove/Universal Records. Philpot's previous release was on my label, Applehead Records. It is called Bitch Be The World. My website is www.appleheadfilms.com......My label's myspace is www.myspace.com/appleheadrecords....Buy Bitch at www.kerascene.com....Support Indiana rock n roll.

AMG (All Music Guide) Philpot Dugger, Indiana USA June 2007Review by Erik Hage On Hate Writes Better Than Love, the young Indiana band Philpot muscle through full-bore, no-frills, gut-punch rock, full of snarling guitars and singer Kentz Ward's raspy, classic rock howl. This is tough and moody music with clotted walls of guitars that sometimes brings to mind Oasis' young and hungry debut, Definitely Maybe (the Oasis of "Rock 'N' Roll Star"). Philpot have a real knack for the rawer and blunter side of things, such as the skuzzy, down-and-dirty "Mean Mean Mean" and the grand, rolling pummel of "Got It In," which tips into early Soundgarden territory with its edgy bombast. Another highlight is the nasty scrum "Evil Has a Face," with Ward snapping off the words in a jagged whine that more than a little recalls Liam Gallagher himself. And that's the rub with Philpot: their strength is dirty, pugilistic, melodic rock. They slide backward when they aspire into other reaches, such as the awkwardly verbose socio-political statement "This Nation's Sun," which bounces along on a ska-like riff and poses the dusty lyric "Tell me what we're fighting for." The navel-gazing ballad "Fall" also comes off a bit clichéd in a self-consciously "power ballad" manner. But those are minor transgressions in an album full of muscular guitars, strong vocals and the kind of straight-ahead rock attack that has practically become a lost art."These Indiana-bred rockers play as if the '70s and 80s never happened - a bridge between Led Zeppelin and Pearl Jam, and yet most of the band was barely walking when Cobain died, let alone Bonham."-Jake Paine, SKOPEPhilpot "Hate Writes Better Than Love" (Toucan Cove) by Paul Autry Ballbuster.com I don't have a lot to say about Philpot. But, they're a great band. The name of their current release is "Hate Writes Better Than Love" and it's pretty much a solid rock album. They're not really breaking any new ground here. You've heard it all before. The only problem I have with saying something like that is the fact that I can't think of anyone they remind me of, which is always a good thing. That means they have their own sound, which comes from having a fresh approach to their particular style of music. They have a good, strong vocalist and I think that's what sets them apart from the competition. You hear this guy and he's just...so right on the money. It's amazing. Philpot is a band that should go far in the music business. I, for one, wouldn't be suprised if they become the next big thing.earcandymag.comPhilpot,"Hate Writes Better Than Love" The guys are years beyond their age in talent. Love & Rockets, the Beatles, Social Distortion, Pearl Jam, the Yardbirds, Alice In Chains, REM and many, many more rock greats are channeled by this group of underage disciples. They can rock. Plain and simple. If you dig any of the bands mentioned in this review then you'll dig Philpot. Favorite track: "Got It In".Benjamin Labarthe-Piol Paris, France "Philpot, An Oasis with muscles, May 17, 2007 Imagine Oasis playing of the music with large guitars always very saturated, a battery which strikes lead, the whole on compositions combining a melody with a fire power. Thus one could summarize this disc which appears a true good surprise but that one will probably never see this side of the ocean… "Philpot - Hate Writes Better Than Love Review By : BoEkAdded : 20/03/'07 Views : 265 Score 78 %Printable Version Label : Toucan Cove / Universal Records Genre : Rock Tracks : 12 Playtime : 44:42 Release : 23-02-2007To be honest, I haven’t got a clue of where to start with this review. The bio that came along with this album is truly impressive and if it wasn’t for the fact that I still had to listen to the music after reading it, I’d gave this band a very high score without even listening to their album. If you’re into the likes of Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Beatles, Oasis, Nirvana, Pearl Jam etc. combined with a modern yet classic sound, just take the time to read this impressive biography and be sure to check these guys out soon. Biography: http://www.toucancove.com/artists/ArtistBioDetail.aspx?aid=3 5. Now, you might think that I would worship Philpot after this intro. Well, not exactly! Fact is, I do grasp their qualities and I do understand that this might be(come) something great but honestly it took me quite a few spins before I really got into it. Production wise there's this kind of thin sound which is something I had to get used to. The vocals have this raw approach that resembles the style Kurt Cobain used to have although Kentz Ward does give his own unique twist to it. Think what you wanna think of it, I just don’t have a lot of experience with the bands mentioned in the intro. Sure, I know quite some material of Nirvana and I do know some Oasis songs as well, but these are just small influences of Philpot’s music and therefore their music actually is something new to me. A style I haven’t heard that much before and definitely one that gives you an impression on how rock used to be years ago. What I’m trying to tell you, I haven’t got a clue whether this music does refer to the likes of Led Zeppelin or The Doors! But I do have a clue on what’s going on here; Philpot plays the kind of raw rock that, no matter your experiences, gives you a strong nostalgic feeling. A cool thing about this album is that there are also some other genres involved. For example country, and even some reggae-like parts pass by. The more I think of it, the more I’m getting the feeling that Kentz Ward could be described as a country version of Kurt Cobain but with a strong approach to rock music. And I mean that in the nicest possible way. Music wise though, there are not that much special features on the album except for the keyboards which are a definitive surplus. It basically comes down to not-too-complex rock music with twists of country/reggae but what really distinguishes this band, is without a doubt the vocalist. All in all I had a very hard time to find out what score I had to give to this album. In the end, I think Philpot has done quite a good job on Hate Writes Better Than Love. Fans of bands mentioned above: go ahead and knock yourself out on this one!
