After contributing to Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul, I published my first fantasy novel under the name of JAX, titled "Heart of the Jaguar," a compelling story in which Mexican folklore mixes with the modern day life of a young girl living in the fictional border town of South Bay. I  take the mythical figure called La Llorona (the weeping woman who is like the boogie man) and give her a new meaning in the story. The young heroine, Nina, discovers that she has a past that links her to La Llorona, and that strong connection helps her to overcome her battered childhood and the traumas that she underwent while living with her abusive stepfather. “Heart of the Jaguar” is a novel that appeals to both adults and adolescents— male and female alike. Flashbacks into the once supreme ancient Aztec civilization bring back to life that now extinct culture that fiercely ruled above other races at the time, including the fictional tribe of the Jaguar people. The novel is crafted into two separate plots that unite at the end of the story--in a battle-- at the paradise of lost souls.
It's PREQUEL is currently in the works! Stay tuned for the audio version of this novel coming soon, 2008!
Here's a sneak peek at part of the first chapter. To read more, go to my "It's finally here!" blog:
Chapters 2-5 are also available on my blog.
An old rotting corpse drenched with flies and maggots appears to her at night. The subtle sound of a suffering whimper bounces off each corner of her room, in the dark. Nina draws the blankets over her head, until she no longer feels the chill behind her neck, and she's lulled herself to sleep, whispering and repeating the words, "She won't come to me tonight…she won't come to me tonight." Children count sheep to help them fall asleep, but Nina spent a lifetime tossing and turning, wishing and hoping, that the cries reverberating in her room, like a wandering echo, were gone. In a final whisper-out of exhaustion-Nina nods off to dreams of unfamiliar places and strange languages...
