FAQs

? GUITARS
WM: I've been endorsing D'Angelico guitars since 2000 and I feel they are a very high quality instrument. I have the NYL-2, an Excel custom and the NYS-2. Check out the entire D'Angelico line by clicking on dangelicoguitars.com on the HOMEPAGE. I also use medium size pics made by Midwestern Musical Company, best pic I've ever used. Check them out at www.midwesternmusic.com
? STRINGS
WM: I've been endorsing Labella Strings for a few years now and I'm extremely satisfied with the quality of their product. They last forever and have an evenly balanced feel under the fingers. The sets I use are the 60PH 14-57, 60JM 13-56 and the 60JL 12-52. Check out the website at www.labella.com
? AMPLIFICATION
WM: As all you guitarist and aficionados know, the great Freddie Green never used an amp with the Basie band for his entire 50 year tenure, so I uphold that tradition. I use a condenser microphone positioned in the area of the lower f-hole, this produces the acoustic sound I need for playing the Freddie Green style. For solo feature spots I use a direct input and a monitor so I can hear myself on stage.
Otherwise, I've been using Polytone Mini-Brute, Mega-Brute and the Walter Woods Stereo amp. I recently purchased the Clarus 1R made by Acoustic Image and the tone is fantastic, very warm like a tube amp. I especially like the built-in digital reverb and it only weighs 6.5 pounds. I have a pair of 12in. JBL E-Series speakers that I use with the Walter Woods or the Clarus.

Influences: That list is long and diverse but I'll give you an idea, starting from the beginning it was my grandfather, (Little Joe) who played the Mississippi Delta Blues style. After him it was all the music and artists of Motown, Jimi Hendricks, Sly and the Family Stone, Santana, Rufus, The Meters, James Brown, Booker T. and the MG's, David T. Walker, Albert King, B.B. King, The Jackson 5, Tower of Power, Kool & The Gang, Earth Wind and Fire and just about everything that was on the radio in the 60's-70's. Later it was Kenny Burrell, George Benson, Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, Joe Pass, Phil Upchurch and lots of others.
