I spent my teenage years pretending to practice for classical piano lessons, busking throughout Northern Germany, and trying to get into diverse music styles such as metal (Iron Maiden), prog rock (Marillion), pop (Tears For Fears). I soon moved on to more elaborate material by the likes of Mark Hollis/Talk Talk, Matt Johnson/ The The and Neil Finn/ Crowded House. What remeins from that era is a deep love for the SONG. Beautifully written and arranged, played with respect for the SONG and not in order to show off one's musical excellence. Hard to find in our time of casting shows, sterile digitalism and vocal wanking.
I travelled to New Zealand and played the drums in different covers bands there - It seems the only bands we ever covered were The Cure and U2... NO! There was some Zeppelin, Kinks, Exponents in there as well ---
Heading back, I started writing my own songs and formed and fronted "Fluid", aged 19. "Invading Your Privacy" was the first song I wrote (not counting "Quicksand", which was rubbish).
I went on to med school in Cologne, where I now live and work. I discovered home recording 2 years ago and spend the little spare time I have writing new songs or committing my older songs to hard disk.
The musicians I love the most nowadays are people like Tom McRae, Josh Rouse and Ben Lee for reasons mentioned above. Not much to say, except: Get into them and buy their records - they're so full of ideas and soul - enough to last a lifetime.
Enjoy listening to my music. Thanks for tuning in -
Marko
