Claudio Alcantar began playing saxophone at the age of twelve. He was a graduate of the Belmont High School Performing Arts Academy where he served as Drum Major, lead alto sax for the Jazz Ensemble and was the recipient of the Sheldon Mehr Music Scholarship. At the age of 16, he had the opportunity to work with members of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and performed with Grammy winner Herbie Hancock. While in High School, he played and performed with the Colburn’s school Concert Band and Wind Ensemble under the direction of Darren Mulder. He was also lead alto for the Los Angeles Youth Jazz Ensemble at USC directed by Dr. Gabriel Alegria and Dr. John Daversa. Mr. Alcantar also marched the Tournament of Roses Parade as a musician for six consecutive years. At Pasadena City College, he studied classical sax with Larry Hughes and jazz improvisation with David Sills. In 2007 he received the Dean's Special Recognition Award, Paul H. Kilian Scholarship Award, Lancer Band Directors' Award, Outstanding Woodwind Performer Award, First place winner for the Jazz Scholarship Competition, and 1st Place winner for the Classical Scholarship Competition for Winds and Percussion and most recently, he was the winner of the Concerto Competition. Mr. Alcantar has recently performed with the Pasadena Young Musician’s orchestra at Disney Concert Hall as a guest performer. Claudio has received his Associates in Arts degree from Pasadena City College and is a student Geoff Nudddell at California State University, Northridge as a Saxophone Performance and Music Education Major. He is the proud recipient of the Ted Gould Memorial Scholarship, and the Arts Council Scholarship.
